    The 24 man stuff is easy farmable content and they won't reward it higher than the highest tier 8 man raid.

    People like big numbers.
    Keeping a large space of 10+ ilvls between sets also allows for compression later on. When numbers become 4-5 digits big, they may, for example, turn i100 gear into i97, and i110 is now i110, with i120 becoming i117, etc.

    All they really did was add one new level of gear that didn't exist in 2.0 release (ilvl 180, Law upgrade). Law's equivalent (170, Darklight) didn't have an upgrade option. That's the only thing that's different from the pattern in ARR. Everything else has an matching equivalent.

    Law = Darklight
    Alex Normal = LotA (Crystal Tower) It's even the same type of gear... gear to use as Filler while you're collecting Savage/Eso (or in ARR terms, Myth/Coil)
    Esoterics = Mythology
    Alex Savage = Coil


    Aside from adding the upgrade for Law (which is really the only new level), they did increase the ilvl of Savage, while Coil was largely a side-grade, as you said. And the upgrade to Eso gear is essentially equivalent to the upgrade to Myth gear that was added later.

    Basically, the perceived changes come from the fact that SE was on the ball this time. With ARR, they released CT and Coil later than they wanted. So the ilvls didn't make much sense. This time, they gave it to us more or less all at once. My point has been that the 3.0 gear progression isn't fundamentally different than 2.0 progression. You still have a builder (Darklight/Law), and Filler (Alex Normal/Crystal Tower), and two "end game" sets (Myth/Esoteric and Coil/A.Savage). The Law upgrade is more or less useless, IMO... just something for us to do while we waited or Alex Normal.

    And I'm saying that mythology and coil were the exact same, with the exception of a weapon they buffed in a later patch.

    Lowest tome is 170, highest gear is 210. People are comparing that to 70 and 90 in 2.0. Instead of two tiers of gear, there are five. Part of the change is due to the philosophy of upgrading gear that was introduced in 2.2, and the other part is that there is a raid difficulty between the ilevel 170 and 210 thresholds. And that raid difficulty drops gear of 190... which is halfway between 170 and 210.

    Myth gear didn't have any upgrade.

    And we don't have a 24-man raid, which will be another tier of gear in between what we have now. We definitely have more range of gear than at 2.0.

    Besides, in 2.0, Myth and Coil were of the same ilvl. Here, Eso is lower and it takes a lot of time to fully upgrade it, so "basic" Eso is a tier on its own.

    The law upgrade is a filler, not really a required tier. And it's equal to the i80 gear from before, which was just added late.

    Eso upgrade is the same tier as Alex Savage.

    24-man raid won't be a new tier. It will most likely drop i200 and maybe the upgrade items for Eso gear.
