WoW is a copy of Everquest.
WoW is a copy of Everquest.
ARR is not a clone of WoW they just use mechanics and gameplay that is similar to all MMO's. No one will say Killzone and Battlezone are CoD clones beccause they have elements that are standard for fps but they do it in the mmorpg genere where insert mmo here is a WoW clone because they use the standard gameplay elements which is a false argument.
With all the intimidating dating depth and obscurity ironed out. At least when it started. I can't speak for anything past vanilla.
Also, it seems some people saying that the game is just copying MMO standards don't seem to realize that the wide majority of these standards are because modern MMOs have been copying WoW sense it got popular. Those mechanics are no less cloning for their popularity.

I'll just say this.
People give Tanaka a bad rap for 1.0 He knew how to make a world that felt alive. 2.0 for all the new convient systems they have implemented it's a seriously dull world.
I guess it would be something like that. I don't know if it is a non sarcastic question or not though. If it is implying that FF took skill chains from EQ. That is false, skillchains have been in FF since FF9 and Chrono Trigger. Now if some earlier game had them then I wouldn't know.
If it was a real question then yes, that EQ2 would be like a skill chain.
I have to be honest I think I want a mix. I am not saying there should be no instances because I think they have their place too. I don't want a pure sandbox and as far as I can see the biggest contender to be somewhat along the lines of what I want is Everquest Next, but with SOE becoming Daybreak and all the people being fired etc I don't know how that will end up anymore. I will keep my fingers crossed though, you never know.
1.0 world feeled not alive. It feeled empty. Except of the aetherite camps and the 2 hamlets in every region there were no settlements, no villages and not even NPCs outside of the 3 cities.
Big =/= alive
Also don't forget the limitation of 30 visible players/NPCs/enemies/objects, in a MMO

One of many, http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/...-playstation-3
There's also several interviews floating around where he states he has "borrowed" from wow. DF and the kick system is one of them.
The big question I suppose is, Does it matter? If it works, is proven to work, and is successful why shouldn't he copy from other mmo's.

Obviously we have different views on the subject, the world had detail a sense of purpose. It took time to get from one end to the other, the monsters were dangerous and smart. Technical limitations aside the open world had a purpose in the world unlike 2.0.
I'll take monsters with AI beyond HULK SMASH and that are actually dangerous over seeing 100 people zerg hunts anyday.
Only purpose was for mainstory quest, class quest, gathering, leves and behest, if you mean open world content with purpose.Obviously we have different views on the subject, the world had detail a sense of purpose. And only a handfull of enemies were dangerous on the same level as you.
