Adding more accurate descriptions certainly wouldn't hurt. I remember how many MRDs there were in early 2.0. Funny how quickly those thinned out :P.

For those of us that played MMORPGs in the past, it wasn't too bad. For those that haven't, it may be more daunting. I knew before I started the game I wanted to be a healer. Read that WHM and SCH were healers. Went with WHM since I hate pets and I read that SCHs used pets. I still like WHM a lot, but I main a DRK now. My cousin, a career tank, read the ability descriptions for MRD and GLA. He chose MRD once he seen overpower and said "hmm, sounds like this class is the AoE tank. I'll take that one." In contrast, someone that has never played an MMORPG, they may not even know what a role is. For all they know, this game plays like an action RPG.

In addition...is it me or the names of the classes/jobs are kind of cryptic too?

When I see conjurer, the first thing I see think isn't a healer but a summoner. You know, someone who conjures things. Granted they explain why they're called conjurer in their story but I can't deny that it's quite misleading at a point.
Arcanist also isn't what I expect: when I think of Arcanist it gives me D&D ideas at first. In essence, I think of a basic mage, not a pet user caster.
Thaumaturge maybe it's the most close to it, since they're essentially magician (although I'm reading that it's more about holy-based magic rather than dark).

For the melee at least they're a bit straightforward: Gladiator since they fight in an arena (and that's also why they used a "gladius" first), while Marauder...I suppose because they're rough? Pugilist is self explainatory but Bards...ehm ok they use an harp and buff people and etcetera, but I don't think that a bow alone fits them: usually bards use all sorts of weapons, even magic (still thinking at D&D lel) and I would've prefferred the bards to be called minstrels of flatout rangers.

Maybe bards could've been sword fighters instead, but I digress here.

The last one is not like the others. The class is Archer, which is very self explanitory. Same with Lancer which you didn't mention at all.

I know exactly what you are saying. My first MMO as well and I picked BLM, way back almost 2 years ago now, because it sounded cool. I really had no idea what it did! I do remember spamming blizzard 2 a lot in my first dungeons LOL

You have to be quite....special to not realize what class is a tank and what isn't.

Especially when the gladiator class quests TEACH YOU HOW TO HOLD AGGRO AND PROTECT PEOPLE.

I don't see this as an issue. You could stamp giant warning labels on something with step-by-step guides on how to perform and you'd still have idiots who don't know what their doing. I don't think we should cater to such people, personally.

Now, if you've never played an MMO or an RPG before and don't know what class roles are to begin with, that's a different story, and you should probably do some research on the MMO genre before playing. But no one will. >_>

Ehm...okay? Archer uses Bows yes but I know some archers also use other kinds of long ranged weapons. But I suppose Archer goes fine with a bow and I'm not really going to nitpick the fact that they can also use swords and such.
However if you mean the archer in-game, as in explained by the archer's story, that's another thing: I forgot the archer quest but I'm sure they explained it well enough and that's fine, I'm not going against it.
I'm just putting out my own take about the Archer and I'm IN NO WAYS saying that they're wrong about it. Just making sure you understand where I'm coming from.

For bard is still the fact that I don't think of solely bow users: I always think of actual melee fighters that can use musical instruments but can ALSO (keyword here ALSO) use long ranged weapon like, as I said, a bow.
But again, it's just my opinion about it: this is how they designed the bards here and I'm not saying they're wrong. I just like the old type of bard, but for the second time, I'm IN NO WAYS saying that they're wrong about it. You can't be never sure...

And for lancer...they use a lance and that's pretty self explainatory too. Again, if you mean the lancer as the game tells you I really don't remember and I'm not going to justify against it: this is yet again my opinion about it and, once again, I'm IN NO WAYS saying that they're wrong about it. Thinking three times is good.

BUT, if anything, they could ALSO be named Hoplites and become tanks, since in a game I played the Hoplite is a tank. wears the heaviest armor and even carries a shield.
And in TERA the lancer uses a spear that it's literally twice the size of a spear in this game AND uses a shield, because they are more reminiscent of the jousting lancers of medieval times. And also they're tanks.

I'm not gonna talk of each class really because, really, it's not a big matter: we can disagree on some topics but in the end it's how SE designed them that's important. There's no certain pattern on designing a class: warriors in this game use an axe, but in others use a sword, bards here only use a bow but in others are melee fighters. It doesn't matter: it's how it is here and they're not changing because it's what they thought a bard or a warrior should fight and, for me, it's completely fine.

.....but of course just because I'm fine with it, it doesn't mean I can't give my two cents about it!

the Icon is blue though, in this game: Blue = tank, Red = DPS, Green = healer. The symbol in the icon only to show their class/job, the colour is what tell the role

Not to mention the early MRD & GLD skill have : Increase eminity, any normal player would had google or ask around what does eminity mean. Those who don't know are ignorance who do not read skill description and it is their fault.

As this was my first MMO I didn't know anything about what a tank or a dps was. Everyone just assumes you know these things but the terminology was something I struggled with for a while playing the game

If you can't take 2 minutes to read about a class that seems interesting to you, then I honestly don't know what to tell you.
I don't think the descriptions are misleading at all. I mean the description and role of each class is on the webpage. If people just spent a tiny bit of time learning about what they're buying/playing there won't be so much confusion.
