Personally, I think they should just make the event permanent.
It would hurt anything (other then a few peoples egos).

They should give people options for all previous FF game characters in some shape or form. Someone could really make a good Rikku cosplay with the ninja class.

Not exactly egos. A lot of people enjoy the lore in FFXIV and to have Lightning appear in the game is kinda breaking it... the ending of Lightning Returns

heavily implies magic no longer exists in her world (thus impossible for her to traverse dimensions).

Shantotto can return and have a sequel to her original event, since she can cast the magic at will and the DQX event can also return, since the characters used were pretty much FFXIV NPC's from a distant land.
