The thing people are saying that no sympathy should be spent on Alh Mhigo is wrong yes they did try to invade others but no one ever asks to be invaded or wants it.

On the Garlens no IV nothing but contempt for people who would wipe out the none extremist vanu vanu for no reason other than they may summon a primal.

My issue with ala'mhigo, is if we go there ever. I will never want to help the mhigans reclaim there homeland. Every single highlander cried about it since 1.0 and has a negative attitude. Such as the mhigan that spit in my face.

Or ilberd doing all that stuff for the greater good of ala'mhigo. I stay tough crap.

    I am tired of them.

Seems like there's 2 types of Ala Mhigans:

    1. The destitute who wish for the glory days of Ala Mhigo to be back and will stop at nothing to do it: Ilberd, formerly Wilred and his crew, most Ala Mhigans we see.

    2. The well-to-do who accepted life in their new home and are lucky enough to live well: Minfilia and that Ala Mhigan scholar in the MNK quest and Raubahn. These folks are hated by the other Ala Mhigans for "abandoning them"

In either case they seem to be fractured group. I can see royalists/traditionalist vs. Garlean sympathizers vs Revolustionist (I doubt Ilberd wants to go backto the old Dynasty ways)

That missing surviving prince is just screaming for a future plot point.

Ala Mhigo was the strongest of the Eorzean city states and at most, their power were at least equal to a Garlean legion; hence, Gaius' subterfuge methods

Lastly, them being violent isn't too surprising. I've noticed that each past/current city state each act the way their patron diety act:

Rhalgr the destroyer = Pretty much kill happy
Oschon the Wandering Scholar = Nymian were wandering scholars helping folks prior to the war
    Llymlaen = Freedom
Nophica = All about plants, etc

Honestly the entire Ul'dah HW story to me seemed to really be slapping me in the face with 'yea we'll be going to Ala Mhigo for the next expansion'.

I can't seem to track it down, but it was stated somewhere they rivaled Garlemald in might, but I do believe it was in reference to Garlemald before their crazy fast magitek expansion. So I suppose they rivaled pre-empire garlemald. Which does coincide with some comments from Ala Mhigan NPC's, one talking about how they had been the shield of Eorzea from invasion for a long time.

I think part of the reason for Ala Mhigo's bad rap is the Summer War, with them fighting Gridania for territory and getting the entire rest of Eorzea pissed off at them. Then they were conquered by Garlemald, turned into an imperial province, and the Ala Mhigans became refugees. Most of said refugees live in a shantytown outside of Ul'dah or a cave in Southern Thanalan, where they scrape out a meager living off the land because Ul'dah (as a merchant society) only respects coin.

That said, they did bring some of it on themselves, and their overzealous patriotism isn't helping. The Ala Mhigans hated their king so much Gaius' spies had no trouble undermining him and conquering the place. The Ala Mhigans are so prickly they actually refuse assistance from non-Ala Mhigans and insist on using their own (scientifically unverified) traditional remedies (though whether they do so because everyone stomped on them after their conquering or just because they're assholes is another matter). Hell, pre-character development Wilred tried to steal crystals from amalj'aa and summon primal!Rhalgr. They're all hotheaded, reckless, and senseless, with the occasional exception - unfortunately that's to be expected from a warrior culture, and even Raubahn isn't exempt from that mindset.

Are they hypocrites? Of course they are. But aren't we all?

Besides I have another theory of ala mhigo's future guys. I dont think is gonna be the next city state we visit, why? Since the exapansion came out, there was no change on the global Eorzea map. I myself exepect a change on Sharlayan, a unique drawing icon like the rest, regarless is abandoned or not, but no there was no single change, is still have have his old icon ( abandoned/conquered city icon ). So, if we go to the nort west of Eorzea and possible the very frontier limits of Garlemand, I dont think we will actualy free Ala mhigo, is os t poosible gonna be something like the Sharlayan we visit now a days, What you think of this guys? Or I could be wrong, is up to SE, but at least is giving me some possible hints.

Maybe some ppl will think, but there must be a new city state. Well who knows

Ala mhigo was mentioned to be the strongest and most advanced nation on Eorzea and they invaded the other states while simultaneously defending against garlemald so they were quite powerful but became weak from political instability.

the city you are thinking of is the drivanian hinterlands in heavensward, most of the zone is the ruins of that city abandoned 15 years before 1.0.
