fairly sure they stated that you wont be able to add materia to Rare/unique NM dropped gear thats the downside of NM gear in the future as to where you will be able to add up to 5 materia to a reg/HQ gear to make it more impressive than NM gear......Materia: The replay value booster.
So, here's why:
1) Run a dungeon 15 times, get solid scale mail. (yay!)
1a) Make a HQ item after 50 synths (yay!)
2) Get the spritbond to 100% and break it into materia (optional, you can break something else or buy the materia)
3) Place 5 materia into the item and fail on the 4th or 5th, lose the solid scale mail or HQ item in the process.
4) Repeat steps 1-3 50 times for every item you need from every single class you have leveld.
Get ready to do the same content over and over and over and over and over again everyone.
You are going to need to to max stats on gear.
Also:
LoL @ when they release gear better than what you have on. Start all over again from square 1.
I have to wonder what the process of attaching materia actually entails. Will it be the same mini-game as a normal synth, or something more?
Except you're forgetting that the majority of NM/raid gear is already obsolete compared to HQ crafted gear.
Yeah, kinda lame that crafted gear (hq) is already better, easier to obtain and is just going to get better...
Crafted gear should be the best crafting gear.
Dungeon gear should be the best mele/mage gear.
They naturally lend themselves to each other.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to start first with a NQ Crab Bow to put 5 materia in it? Then you can sell it, buy 5 or 7 HQ Crab Bow and start with them.
The NQ crab bow with 5 materia would be finish. The buyer don't need to take the risk to make it better (except he need another materias). But a HQ crab bow with no materia there is still the risk, which would it make cheaper than the NQ crab bow with all 5 materias
And the difficulty of making the crab bow +3 means nothing?
I think it's more like 1 NQ Crab Bow with 5 materia is roughly equal in value to an HQ Crab Bow with 1 materia (which is guaranteed to be slotted). Not in terms of time / difficulty to make, but in terms of end value to the user.
I'm not archer, so I'm going to have to use an example of something I'm more familiar with, my trusty Iron Halberd. A +3 on an Iron Halberd adds +26 attack, +23 accuracy, and +22 critical. These value are large, and there are three of them. They must be worth at least three materia slots, and probably more like four. This makes a +3 Iron Halberd roughly equal in value to an NQ Iron Halberd with four materia. The HQ has bigger values, but the NQ has most customization possibilities.
In the end, I don't think I would pay the value of 5 or 7 HQ items for a single NQ version of the item with five materia slotted in it. Not unless materia bonuses are a lot larger then I think they will be.
