Posted this is the other thread. I agree that actual gear loss is a really bad idea:
I've already seen a game try this, and it wasn't pretty. At all. This makes sense. Taking the gear itself is overkill.
Again, Phantasy Star Universe already tried this, and it went very poorly. In that game, you could use an item to upgrade your weapons much like enchantments in western MMOs, from +1 to +10. But if it failed, the weapon or armor itself was destroyed. The community hated it and it defeated the purpose of the upgrade system itself because people were too afraid to go beyond what was guaranteed.
Eventually, Sega took out the gear destruction from the list and just made the weapon/armor drop back to its base stats and lost an upgrade level (max would be from +10 to +9 if you failed, to +8 max if you failed again, etc.), and you lost the item you used to upgrade it. People actually used the upgrade system and weren't scared to try it because now, you still lost something but it wasn't the entire weapon or armor you spent a ton of money on.
now that its harder to make money and gear will be in MORE demand the prices are only gonna go up for weapons. more people buying weapons means prices go up. so now with weapons going out of the system those HQ items will be worth more. people are expecting the easy craft system to counter this. i hope it does.
The only gear that'll become wanted will be R50ish gear. Honestly, with how fast you level, why would you waste materia on low ranked equipment?
You should simply lose the materia you were trying to upgrade with, and destroy all other materia within the equipment.
*** breaking my items I worked hard for. More proof that Square doesn't know how to properly make an MMO. Asian MMOs in terms of the genre need to die. >.>

SE knows how (FFXI) or at least they did...their recent blunders have been terrible...FEZ (Servers shut down quickly) and FFXIV on release...

Healer strike is ridiculously foolish and accomplishes nothing
It sounds similar to the weapon upgading in Ragnarok Online. The first few upgrades to weapons were pretty easy but the higher the level you wanted to upgrade to increased the chance that your weapon would be lost in the process. It meant that there were very few fully upgraded weapons. I don't think this is a bad system, anyone can have an upgraded weapon but if you want the best its going to require a lot of work and quite a few attempts.
Brutal yes... but a nice way to both encourage crafters to craft more finished items, and to provide a strong demand for items.
Reminds me alot of refining gear in RO.
Based on the tier of the item each refinement increased the chance of loss.
Though depending on the rate of spiritbinding it might be brutal in terms of grinding specific materia.

p.s.
Hah, Kafeen beat me to the RO reference.
What is this, a free-to-play game?
Oh, wait...
I am 100% against this, and if it wasn't mathematically impossible I would be more.
To me this is the epitome of free-to-play. As in in my head it's what made all those F2P games I played suck.
And
if
I
could
remember
all
of
them
off
the
top
of
my
head
we
would
probably
have
a
nice
long
list
of
games
not
worth
playing.
Pay money, attempt to upgrade your gear, lose it all, pay more money...
I hate this renowned mechanic with great passion.
I'm not of the gambler mindset.
Time is valuable.
I like my work to actually count for something.
I don't know what's up with you people saying "I'd like all my time and effort to get washed down the river because it'll stimulate the game's economy!"
You've either got a screwed up sense of fun or a desire to wreck others'. (Or bad judgment.)
How 'bout you discard your entire inventory and start buying?
That'll stimulate the economy in perfectly similar fashion. You'll be so pleased!
It all depends in how they implement it.
I can certainly understand both views on this topic, It's hard to face losing an item you've put alot of work into. But at the same time, if the stipulations aren't too severe it can be an interesting dynamic that greatly bolsters demand for items.
sooo, everyone wanna hear what they meant by this? We will have to use more than one item while crafting materia on items, meaning we will lose all materia and CATALYSTS used in the process. The weapon is NOT part of the new materia :O
Last time they said something like this yoshi-p had to say it out loud for most of you to understand xP
