Instead of gear loss how about a less harsh outcome?

Quote from "[dev1017] Materia crafting system (name tentative)"
    "•Attaching Materia
Attaching materia requires the “materia melder” key item, an apparatus which can be obtained via a quest available to Disciples of the Hand level 18 or above (with the exception of culinarians and alchemists). The apparatus allows players to attach one piece of materia per item.

Players who have met certain requirements can obtain the more advanced ”augmented materia melder,” which allows the attachment of up to five pieces of materia per item. Players can never fail to attach the first piece of materia. However, the success rate progressively decreases with each subsequent piece of materia. A failed attempt to attach materia will result in the loss of all items involved in the process, barring the key item."

Now i think losing gear in an MMO is Very harsh. I guess it will be ok in this game because you are allowed to rank up all classes and crafts but here is something i suggest.

Instead of losing the gear (some +3 gears cost over 10 mil) how about losing all its durablilty? SE can make it so you can only slot Materia on gear with 100% durability. To make it harder SE can even add another "spiritbond" type meter. This second meter is there so you can not slot a Materia to a gear one after another. So once you fail/win a sloting you have to build this second meter up again to try another.

Those are my ideas. What are yours? lets talk about other outcomes other then gear getting destroyed that we worked hard for. (crab bow +3........)

P.S. I wont be answering smart remarks (Doc...) nor is this thread for people who like the upcoming system. This thread is for ideas other then losing gear. Keep it that way.

They are doing this to boost the economy. By destroying gear, gears will be in huge demand, when gears keeps moving, it means raw materials will be moving as well, It helps the game's economy tremendously by removing currently overflowed gil and overstocked raw materials.

No one is telling you to attach your Crab Bow +3, you don't need to risk the gear you worked hard for. it's all about option, do you wanna play safe? or do you wanna strive for perfection?

The first materia attached will have no risk at all but only if you decide to go even further you will have to think about the risks, which is fair.

This seemed horrible at first, but I suppose their reasoning for this is so everyone isn't essentially required to put 5 materia into each piece of equipment. Putting in one or two pieces of materia is making gear better than it was before... So I guess it's fair.

How about we let the *** system get implemented before you talk about how it should be nerfed.

Or make it that it cost Gils to put materia in the gear
    +1 = 1000
    +2 = 10000
    +3 = 100000
    +4 = 1000000
    +5 = 10000000

    Nerf it quick!
I'm glad there is going to finally be a system that imposes a rewarding challenge with a little spice of luck in the mix for a change. Getting the perfect weapon will take TIME and MONEY and most of all TIME!

We need to see the system in action to see how harsh the failure rates are when trying to put multiple tiers of materia on one item. Making custom gear shouldn't be a simple task it should be something that is time consuming and takes some effort to get done.

To make the ultimate weapon we need to.

    1. Obtain the item we wish to enhance (+3 crab bow or whatever you feel you "Need" to upgrade)
    2. Obtain the materia through grinding of other weapons or through cold hard cash.
    3. Get the catalysts for crafting (I doubt it will be too hard or expensive to obtain these items)
    4. Find or be a high ranked crafter, who know if rank even has anything to do with sucsess rates yet though.
    5. Pray.

The destruction of items, and consumption of gil will stimulate the economy. It's too bad their isn't any real NPC gil-sinks floating around I think they should have a NPC who sells some basic materias for a nice chunk of change lazy people are so easilly parted with their gil.
