Fates with a single boss, yes, maybe. But they still die faster than you can get 3 combos out, unfortunatelly.

For me, as much as a love tanking, i try to always mantain my blm with a decent set of gear for those moments when i feel like don't thinking too much in dungeon runs, or tabbing out to chrome while flare finishes its cast.

Wow so many replies!, thanks for all the people who answered, I wasn't able to reply because I reached out my limit, but I followed your advices. I continued with my DRK and I already did The Dusk Vigil, Sohm Al, The Aery and Ravana HM, all the dungeons went pretty smoothly except for Ravana that was a mess the first 3 pulls because I didn't know that the walls break after a while and that you can fall (I felt terrible T_T). But overall I like experience, I dont need to deal with tanks that want to pull the whole dungeon and expect me to heal them without any problems and I usually ask to the healer if they are ok with big pulls, I dont have any enmity issues and feels great to deal with the actual boss face to face and not babysit heal bars as a healer. I think I will keep it as my main and as you said its a challenge and I think that that's what I was looking for on this game.

It's because tanks are labeled or considered as a "leader" type and guess what happens to people who lead? They get criticized. A lot of people do not like criticism or like the feeling of people bellowing down their neck so most people shy away. Plus, a lot of people are "followers" so they play DPS classes where they don't have to do any leading or anything of that nature.

I personally love tanks and have tanked for many years since Everquest 1. I love that I can control the pace at which the group moves in some form or another plus I have a good memory so I enjoy memorizing tactics/strategies so It helps leading groups when the tank knows what to do/what not to do so I can help others. I do enjoy dps classes and healing but for some reason, in this game, I can't pinpoint a DPS class to focus on. I go from Monk, to Black mage, back an forth when I do play a DPS class. Tanks, hell, I love them all. Healers, well, since I have a 52 Summoner, that means my Scholar is 52 but I don't know if I enjoy the healing style over the Astrologist.

It has quite a steep learning curve right at the start. But once the basic has been stamped inside your brain, it's easy to tank, even when it's a new instance.

I tanked one of the Expert dungeon yesterday as a first timer with my WAR. Still using my Zeta + Augmented Poetics. I wanted to test out how hard the mobs hit, so I pulled 2 groups at once for the first pull. Ended up using all of my CDs. After that, just small groups. So here, it means that I understand how far I can stretch out my tanking abilities and how the team fares in AOE and single targets, as well as the healing abilities of my healer. Small groups ended up being easier because the SCH can DPS as well and it makes things go a lot faster.

Even at the bosses, the vet MNK and SCH just gave me two lines of tips. The rest is just your tanking skills such as handling agro, taking up adds, mitigating big hits, turning the boss away from the rest of the team, etc.

I mained WAR right from the start of ARR and the first few dungeons were a pain, yes. I didn't know about flash, about the agro meter and about these small details of being a tank. The ones that didn't stick with being tank probably gave up at this point and the better ones stayed. The excellent ones stick with it despite the inevitable bad talking you'll get from other people and universally learn about how mobs and bosses work.

tl;dr Steep learning curve at the start + the chances of screwing up is bigger than others = Not a good place to start learning to tank.

You can't get into any of the expert dungeons unless you're A) level 60 and B) have 145 ilvl. I suppose lodestone might not have updated your level if you just dinged 60 yesterday, but you can't get in with Zeta + Augmented Poetics. Unless you changed once you got in (after having 145), in which case I'm surprised you weren't kicked.

Did you mean one of the leveling dungeons, like Dusk Vigil or the Vault?

No, I mean one of the dungeons included in them. If I'm not mistaken The Aery was one of them, yes? If it is, I am correct. If it's not, then my bad and sorry. I haven't unlocked them all yet (Only Dusk Vigil, Sohm Al and The Aery) so I think there would be more.

Nope, none of the non-60 dungeons are in Expert Roulette. They are included in the "Low Level" roulette.

So which of the new, non-60 dungeons did you use your ARR gear in?

Expert dungeons are now only lvl 60, and only two of them are in there. Aery is lvl 55 and inthe Low Level one. High level is still all the lvl 50 dungeons.

Ahh so in that case, I apologise. But still, my post stands about how certain experience is needed to tank efficiently.

Its a pretty big learning curve. I was a SMN for the longest and just got tired of the long que times. So I made a Paladin and tried it out. I didnt realize I missed alot of mechanics from several dungeons that I just didnt notice because I was a dps and just did rotation after rotation after rotation.

I even tell every group that this is my first time, but I read the guide so I am not completely lost in the dark on a first time run. I eventually tried out WAR to get a different aspect to tanking. Now I have a lvl60 DRK and there are times that I feel squishy in certain content, but its a learning process.

Now I go into dungeons knowing which adds are going to hit me the hardest. Now I barely play my SMN because I love tanking so much.

If anything tanking requires a large amount of self confidence. For those tanks starting out right now at lvl30 who havent tanked anything before, and dont have even 1 crossclass skill. Those are the ones I notice who struggle.
