Add: being able to afk on trash pulls in dungeons after 3 aoe enmity button pressings and STILL keep aggro ♥
But most importantly: Heavy armor, big axes or swords and instant queues.
by being THE tank in your team you ensures that you WON'T get a crappy tank ! You set the dungeon pace too. People have to follow you. You da party leader =)

I play MNK and PLD. Firstly MNK for static, but always up for tanking too, and succesfully tanked the majority of content upto Bismark extreme. Honestly, from my opinion, I find MNK puts more pressure to perform than when I'm tanking. On tanking, if you fluff your rotation while dealing with mechanics theres no issue as long as you stay in the front of enmity. Whereas with MNK if you fluff your rotation it can be a noticeable DPS loss.
In other words, I find tanking a lot easier with less pressure than DPSing.
Because they get 97% of AST healers slowing down their runs to a crawl.
Almost afraid to que with the fear that I wont get a Scholar/Whm or 3% of AST's. And by I mean 3% I'm just assuming there is a faction of the AST populous that doesn't make dungeon running lame as fuck, if I went off personal experience it would be 0.5%.
I see bad dps all the time, except bad dps are a lot less relevant if you're just farming. Bad tanks and healers are harder to carry, since both of my current characters are Tanks, I have no one to blame for tanking inadequacies but myself.
I presume most of these AST aren't even bad players, but bringing out the power of that class in the circumstances desired after running content 40/50 times, is not something I see very often at all. Basically goes that I que for something go "hope its not an AST" see its an Ast "okay gotta reduce my pulls..." if I don't reduce it, boom wipe, now spend an extra 5 minutes on it. Brb Scholar/Whm doesn't matter if they're brand new, they handle everything.
Can do anything with a typical df AST if I slow it down, but I don't have the same patience I did at the start unfortunately.. Tempted to just create a new gear set of full vit shit, and use some Keepers to go full Vit on every run where I have an AST. Just to save myself the headache.

I usually play tank to relax.
In dungeons it's by far the easiest job to play, spamming AoEs to keep aggro and blowing def cooldowns.
It's a change from DPS but that might be because I always try to perform at top levels.
Bad tanks hate me for that because they won't keep up good tanks love me because we breeze through that dungeon.
Yes I'm the kind of DPS some people here hate because I don't give a Dhalmel about aggro. I do my job which is DPS and expect the tank to do his.
I never had problems with that either and when a DPS stole aggro from me it encouraged me to perform better so it doesn't happen.
That said; DPS who pull should just die, this is not their job and if the tank is obviously undergeared it might be a good idea to hold back for the first seconds of the pull.
I'm not saying tanks are easy in general, in raids they have to time their def cooldowns perfectly, keep movement to an absolute minimum while still getting out of shit and grab adds on the fly which can be stressful when everyone is going all out.
Some here say people who can't tank play DPS, well most of the time they can't DPS either and it's not true that they will go unnotized, you don't need a parser to see which DPS is performing bad.

Honestly, a good way to practice tanking is to do fates. Learn how to do the proper rotation and if things go bad, just back out of it so another tank steps in. Practice and learn the mechs for whatever tank you are. Go in a dungeon/raid as healer or dps and while playing that role, watch the tank and learn what he/she does so that you know what to do when you step up to the plate as a tank.

Blasphemy! Everyone there's only one rotation that tanks use in Fate grinding:
