I don't believe the WOD is THE Derplander, but a representation of what our alternate self would be. Remember, the group of WODs in Final Fantasy 3 weren't clones of your party, but just people who had similar goals.

I don't personally think it's going to be "us" as in the WoL.
SE has the ability for all those saying that they hope they do something with our characters if you've played through a certain jobs quest line.
SPOILERS
As you can see SE can copy our characters and do stuff to them.
Anyways I'm thinking it might be the derplander and the other WoL that were "forgotten" because Elidibus says "The time has come for you and YOURS to join the fray".
Again I'm hoping for some good ole FFXI flash backs of divine might.
My character is legacy, thus one of the "forgotten". So unless my story makes me go dark...
Plus, Derplander, again isn't an actual character, and any legacy character is one of the "forgotten", so I highly doubt that theory.
I believe you got it right with the "shadow self"
It could be something along the lines of that us legacy players were never actually there doing the 1.0 stuff we physically did, lore-wise. False memories is a cliche strong enough for this game.
Everything we thought we did. Our accomplishments. Our awards. All fake! Something happened to the real hero and the world needed their replacement.
Now we'll meet the original warriors that we're trying to be, unknowingly so.
That or it's just our lovable derplander! :3
If so I hope SE has properly prepared for the WoD being different for each player if they plan to provide the WoD with their own voice actor. My character is legacy, thus one of the "forgotten". So unless my story makes me go dark...

I won't be surprised either since from the beginning of 2.0 we see a lot of people praying for the WoL after the WoL disappeared at the End of an Era. Each person had prayers for the return of the WoL in the beginning of 2.0 so it may be possible those prays created a manifestation of the 1.0 WoL (2.0 New Adventurer players), or at least a clone of the 1.0 WoL(1.0 legacy players), born from the prays of the people in Eorzea and since people could not properly remember the WoL it allowed our character to take on any customizable appearance we choose in Character creation even for Legacy WoL to have new appearances. It could be something along the lines of that us legacy players were never actually there doing the 1.0 stuff we physically did, lore-wise. Also..
despite Primals now revealed to be created by people's imagination through prayers and beliefs this may also apply to our character. It may even explain why our character is growing stronger since the more the WoL acts the more people believe in the WoL which gives him more power like the Primals.

In all honesty, if they pull awe do not actually get to see his face. However, the WoD appears to resemble the Midlander from the FF14 Trailers. I can only guess he and his fellow Warriors of Darkness may take on the appearance of the Warriors of Lights from the Trailers or the WoD our character face may look like our character.
I'm fine with that. That's one of the cooler ways to pull it off.doppelganger story out of it (which we've kinda been lead-on with with the "white" Ascions...)
On the OTHER hand...
If we end up fighting the Scions-possessed-by-Ascions, that's a disappointment. We ALREADY had that storyline for ARR.
Like... the best way to pull off a Warrior-of-Darkness storyline and battle is to actually make the final battle:
A Doppelganger set that duplicate the entire 8-player party, complete with gear. Where the players have to take on their own double, and makes the players in your own party attackable. Literately requires everyone to "take on" their own doppies 1:1 and curb the AOE's.
Yoshi-p said yes that he is a representation of us but he also on his own Journey with his friends. He does live in eorzea and we may end up seeing him later in the game. While Derplander in the movie could be a representation of us follow the WOL story-line they could be a derplander within the game which it seem to me what yoshi-p was saying by we may see him in the game later and that he is a person in the game.A lot of people are saying, "Derplander is the Warrior of Darkness"... but Derplander doesn't exist. He's simply a representation of the player PCs. So saying, "Derplander is the WoD" is claiming that our characters are going to be come WoDs and it was our characters talking to the Ascian... which it obviously wasn't.
Besides, even if Derplander was a character in game, he's a DRG now, not a WAR. Just because the WoD shown at the end is a Hyur Warrior doesn't really mean anything. At best it means that the WoD are "shadows" of our characters or versions of us from another dimension.
Him and his friends are pretty much real NPC in the game by the sound of what he said during that interview. Forgot which one it was i'm sure someone would remember and post it.
Him and his friends could be the WOL seeing how they said you and your fray can join the battle now. I find it hard to believe that cute lalafall can be evil. But if i know anything about lalafall is they could be a****** and evil and cute all at the same time.

It has never been confirmed that Derplander doesn't exist outside of the "as a representation of the player character" and it looks like there is evidence to the contrary so... I'm all for it being a different person instead of some lame doppleganger. Talk about predictable. My favorite theory is that we're a sort of primal/eikon/ascian. So far that makes the most sense.
Correct me if i am wrong,
But at the end of 1.0 when dalamud fell, Louisoix invoked a very powerful spell, which not only wisk the warriors of light into the future, but also made ppl forget who they actually are but only remembered their deeds. It undoubtly has the same effect on the warriors of light themselves. The truth is the very charactor you are playing now is the original warrior of light that fought at cateneau. ^^
