BTW They did not speed up the leveling process considerably, all they did was add EXP to 2.1-2.55 MSQ quests and make first time dungeon/trial/etc runners have priority over people re-queuing. They did not change a single thing other than that, unless you can post proof of it which is BS because i just sat through 1-50 on this game and it was the same as always then yeah I am all ears!
1-50 was a slow grind the same as ever, adding EXP to 2.1-2.55 doesn't do anything, in actuality it over levels you for heavenward which yes is good in 1 way but at the same time bad because I would rather start in heavenward at 50 the same as everyone else rather than go into Heavensward at level 55 face rolling until i hit the lvl 55+ quest/mob areas

And there's nothing wrong with that.
I love the story in FFXIV. I love that each class (even crafters and gatherers) have storylines to accompany them. I love that they offer lore explanations for why you have to fight stronger versions of the primals.
The dialogue is well-written, well-thought out and all around very good. And HW's storyline in particular is awesome and has me really invested in the characters.
And I believe you'd be a fool to not do the storyline, since it gives a ton of exp that you'd have to grind out otherwise.
But ultimately, none of that justifies making the story mandatory and gating content behind it.
If you want to play the story, then do so. If you don't, then don't. The quality of the story and the rewards offered by the story are ultimately irrelevant to the discussion of whether or not the story should be mandatory.
There's no point in forcing people to do something that they don't want to do when those people would play your game otherwise.
Another example of people being forced to do things they don't want to do is MMOs with world PvP. Some people just hate PvP and want absolutely nothing to do with it, which is why those MMOs offer PvP and PvE servers with different rulesets.
And again, the biggest irony with forcing people to go through the story quests at 50 is that they're almost guaranteed to not see the story because of how drawn out and boring 90% of those quests are.
SE allows us to skip everything. I am in ishgard and STILL skipping everything. The MSQ should be OPTIONAL. My 15 friends, relatives, and facebook people would come to this game if they were not forced into a 90% SOLO MSQ. That is NOT an MMO and that is a problem. Seeing as how SE allows us to skip it should be optional entirely to allow us PLAYERS to make the decision how WE level and not have a story hugger play-style forced upon us.
The ONLY thing I can come to agreement on is FORCING the MSQ story for RELEVENT content.
Say patch 3.1 comes out with a large MSQ patch, that should be required, fine. Everything before it should be OPTIONAL.
When the new expansion comes out after hevensward, which it will, everything BEFORE the relevant and up to date content should then become OPTIONAL.
That is what I can agree with and that is how SE should have done it.
Making the lackluster story optional pre-patch/pre-HW will not harm anyone playing. It will still be there for those who want it and like it. Hell I even think SE should add a check box that when clicked in the system settings it says "Check this box to make the Main Story quest line mandatory for leveling as it was when the content was new and relevant" This way players who want to KEEP it that way and to be forced through the story will do it and those that do not, wont.
If you don't do it you don't get your magitek armor, and other nice goodies. The rewards from the quests should be enough incentive for those who want to complete the story to do so. Also the story should be able to stand on its OWN! If it is a good story people WILL do it. If not then SE needs to go back to making single player story RPG games because right now, SWTOR is beating ff14 when it comes to story. Would I have stopped when I got my magitek armor and went into the new relevant content? yes I would and I advise SE to make this happen and STOP forcing a story hugger play-style upon everyone. SWTOR even allows friends to enter your story and help u and watch it with you, which is awesome, something SE doesn't allow. SE likes to keep us playing an MMORPG solo 90% pre-SW to which I will never understand why.
I love this game completely. I play it for friends and raiding as the raiding here is much harder then World of Warcrafts. I play it for the MMO portion. Forcing us to solo is NOT a good thing. Just like forcing everyone to group in FF11 in order to level was not a good thing either. Making it Optional for non-relevant content is a good balance as it does not affect anyone else playing. The MSQ teaches nothing about your class anyway.

Is this the thread that refusing to die? LOL. I am finished with 3.0, and half done with another character on 3.0, as well as unlocking second area via MSQ on a third character, and a fourth character about to do Garuda normal, while already level 42. The speed that you can level through MSQ is ridiculous now, apart from giving you instant level up, you can just go through all the quests, daily roulette, guildhest first completion, fate, weekly challenge, hunting log, msq, and occasionally do a dungeon or two per your level to gear ups. IT IS FAST!!! 3.0 also goes by so fast on your second and third because you ALREADY KNOW what to do, getting aethernet access to fly takes mere minutes for the outworld - obviously the quest one is longer.
This point would only be meaningful if all 4 million people had seen this thread and opted not to like it.
The forum-going populace is a MUCH smaller number than the sub base (and really, I think everyone knows that).
And if you're going to call it irrelevant, then everything ever posted on the forum, ever, is also irrelevant.
The number of people who have come forward about experiencing similar issues is far higher than I expected, and high enough that SE should consider doing something.
Are you trying to bring this guy to mind?
And it doesn't matter. This thread was already over the moment someone posted that Yoshi-P was fine with people "fast forwarding" the story quest, and if he's fine with that, there's no reason to keep it as mandatory. If he had said something like, "We worked extremely hard on the story and would prefer people to see it.", that'd be one thing, but he basically said the opposite.
Ergo, the story quest has no reason to be mandatory. If there was a reason, one of the dissenters would've come up with an argument against it (other than "Because I want everyone to have to suffer through the MSQ like I did!", I mean).
