Okay, I'm a little confused. The author names Miku as a counter-example, but Miku is not just a random mish-mash of phonemes, it also has meaning. Is it that Raen names just have older Japanese names, or names that have meaning?Old Japanese names had meaning, and because of that, so do Raen names.
Miku doesn't mean anything written like that, you put it in a sentence and it doesn't make sense, the only meaning of miku is knife ( http://jisho.org/word/%E3%81%BF%E3%81%8F )Okay, I'm a little confused. The point is that they are named with words and not names.
With this Kirito and Asuna will conquer Eorzea !!
So, to oversimplify, Native American styled names, but in Japanese? I always thought names like Aiko made sense, even though grammatically "affection child" doesn't.Miku doesn't mean anything written like that, you put it in a sentence and it doesn't make sense, the only meaning of miku is knife ( http://jisho.org/word/%E3%81%BF%E3%81%8F )

I tried putting in another example they provide into that website (which is actually a pretty neat find, thanks!), but Unzan just translated to "mathematical operation; calculation."
This is going to take some research for a person ignorant to Japanese culture like myself, unless I'm missing something.
Searching for the names on ancestry.com will at least tell you if you've got the name you want before the 18th century. Though I'm still trying to puzzle out if I can keep my current name, or at least Lin...
