So, basically (and I'm sorre if I misread that as english is not my native language), you only receive an additional retainer. So you can buy up to 5 retainers.

Tha japanese is talking about "3 or more retainers", not about "more than 3".

Taken from the same thread:

3以上 usually means 3 or more.
In this case, "in order to employ 3 or more retainers, blah blah blah."

So it's the same worded differently.
