I've personally found letting people know I'm new to tanking the dungeon (or raid, in case of LotA) because while I'm pretty sure I "know" the fight, until you actually start trying to tank it you don't REALLY know it. Watching someone tank something is a lot different than actually doing it yourself. Sometimes there are mechanics, moves to watch for, etc that you don't even know about as a non-Tank that someone might be able to point out for you if you let them know.

Unless you're 100% focused on DPSing, which you shouldn't be due to mechanics, you should know the fight by watching the tank, the only exceptions are end game fights[Primal ex's, coils, towers, ect] as those take on a lot more mechanics for each individual role in most cases. But 1-49 they don't really do anything different other than position the mob. Whats really hard to learn coming into any new job are their rotation's and how to play the job well, as many people don't, and probably why so many think that marking is for keeping hate, when really it's best utilization is to down certain mobs fast[assuming you can mark fast], assuming you're in a party that has a DPS that can only single target at the time.
