People keep bringing up Mongolians because the only information we have on Othard is that it is vaguely Asian. Mongols are the best known Asian steppe people so there you go. Also there's no such thing as "native american culture" there's hundred of tribes with theirown cultures. Navajo, Cherokee, Blackfoot and Inuit don't all share a common culture.

The only Doman characters with a last name thus far are all ninjas and could have that issue. We have a number of named refugees who all have Japanese personal names. Unless ALL the refugees are Ninjas.

Yeah, but Yugiri's the only Au ra. So a 'traditional' name might be different. Still, it does seem like a fairly safe bet that the personal names at least are Japanese/Chinese in origin for the Raen. It's the family names that are up for debate.

I disagree with this theory. While my knowledge of the Japanese language is crappy (re: I know only what I've gleaned from anime), none of the NIN job characters fit into this. Oboro translates to "dim," and while this might be ninja-themed ("Dim Moonrise," making it easier to be sneaky) the names don't really have anything to do with each other. Tsubame translates to "swallow," as in the bird (Karasu even taunts her with this, "Look, swallow, I know you love me."). Karasu similarly translates to "crow," which has nothing to do with his supposed surname (crows don't have red beaks).

Even Yugiri Mistwalker I find suspect. I don't know what "Yu" can translate to, but if "Mist" were in her first name it would probably be "Kiri-" something. (Kyoko Kirigiri, of Danganronpa, has a last name that translates literally to "fog cutter.")

But again, my knowledge of Japanese is cursory at best, and there is the high likelihood they're all using pseudonyms because they're ninja.

Not ALL the refus are ninja, but a fair number of them are; you interact with them on occasion after 2.2, and Yugiri uses them as spies and contacts throughout Eorzea for the Scions.

What I am saying is the only Domans we see get last names are Ninja. But we do see other Refugees get called by names including children in the plot. So the last name thing might be Ninja only but we can assume Raen at the least use Japanese personal names as Domans.

Prevailing theory, highly probable, but unconfirmed. Regardless, that's only 1/4 of the Auri naming conventions (and runs on an assumption).

All this rage over the auri naming conventions not being out weeks/months before HW kind of amuses me, considering we had to wait three years after launch for the other races'. It's not really that big a deal if they only come out right before / at launch.

2.5 years. Ish. And this sort of thing was what people were hoping to have improved (or excised) with the dev team shakeup.

In Japanese, the second kanji in a word generally has it's first sound softened. This turns the sounds produced by what would normally be a "t" into a "d", an "s" into a "z", and, more noteworthy, a "k" into a "g".

Ah, makes a little more sense then. Thanks much for the shot to the brain!

In exchange, I will tell you that you have to use != for "does not equal" in most programming. Regrettably, I fear it's far less useful information.
