If you think this is an action worthy of calling it out "snitching," then you know what the friend was doing was wrong. If you don't want to be snitched on, don't blatantly do something illegal in front of others showing it off. Sounds to me the friend was almost blatantly flaunting it considering when and how it happened.

Do you whatever you wish to do OP. If your friend is going to get angry at you for reporting their gil buying, then THEY'RE not the real friend here. It's a game, yeesh.

If you're going to report him, I'd recommend being upfront with him about that. Secretly reporting him to teach him a lesson isn't a good thing to do to a friend. Be honest, tell him why you think gil buying isn't right and what it's doing to XIV. I do think that he should be reported and suspended for a brief time, but if I were going to do that to a friend I would speak with them first. He may just quit the game as a whole and go to another game where he can buy gold without any repercussions if you simply report him without his knowledge. The right lesson doesn't always sink in.

He's a terrible friend because he comes here and asks a question and is thinking about both his friend and the community over it?
A lot of people have mixed feelings here. So no, he's not terrible in my eyes.
If you don't wanna be reported for doing something wrong then don't do it.
Why is he even jumping servers instead of being with OP and his server?

Talk to him. People need to stop tryna find easy ways out and earn crap like the rest of us.
    Lessons in Moral's here.

The worse part is that he plans on making a character on Lamia, meaning he's going to buy EVEN MORE GIL. What do I do!? I want to play with him but I don't want him on this game if he's just going to ruin the game like that.
Step 1) Talk to him about it.

If he doesn't realize what he's doing is wrong, or worse... thinks you're an idiot for having morals, then this is not a good friend. Perhaps he was a notorious gil buyer on FFXI too, and you just didn't see it then.

    Step 2) Report it.

If you talk to him about it first, he may single you out as the person who reported him. If you report it first, he may still get mad, but on top of that, be mad that you didn't even get give him a chance to explain. The right thing to do would be to report him, regardless, but if you value that friendship, then you should try and get him to realize the error of his ways first.

    ...

I also want to point out that friend toxicity spreads really quick. There should be zero tolerance for cheating in the game, and even actively knowing that someone is engaging in it is enough to give the notion that SE doesn't care, which makes other players see how far they can go before they are caught.

So many Lawful Neutral and Lawful Evil people here. .-. Since he's my friend (And he's my friend, it is for a reason), I wouldn't report him. He's doing that on his own and, any consequence beyond that it's his responsability alone. If something happens, the first person he'll point out will be you.

I wouldn't even compare buying gil with thievery, it's on a different spectrum. He's not abusing on other people. He's just one gear in this huge system. You can talk to him and tell him it's wrong to do that. Don't backstab him just like that.

Thank you. This is most likely the route I will choose. I hope in the end he knows its just a video game and we'll still be friends.

Because talking to him is not an attempt to stop him, right? Reporting your friend and getting him banned is the only way, right? Do you even have friends? Is a videogame more important than your friends? See? I can make assumptions as well.

Well that's why I came to the forum for a second opinion. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I let him continue, then we'll still be friends as normal, but the community will take a hit. If talking to him isn't enough, and I report him, that would be 1 less friend I can play with. There's no right answer.

    no it won't XD seriously.

nearly all items are easily gotten, there is already way to much of everything, no matter if it is gotten illegally or not.
