It's not like clothing changes your gender or sex. It's just an unwritten social contract on what we expect to be acceptable for our own time and culture. The only strength it has is people's compliance with it as it stands.
Frankly, I don't see any rational reason why it shouldn't be at least allowed. I get there might be technical, time, and money issues that could pose as a solid detractor. But I don't quite get the fevered offence to the idea. (Though I expect a lot of it is just reactionary from the heated defense on the subject I see thrown around. Seriously, someone who's uncomfortable with something they rarely see makes them a "bigot"? That's hardly fair. It's human nature to be wary of what appears off kilter from expected standing. That's just survival instinct.)
