The very definition of a foundation was what was wrong with the game the most. The UI was terrible (it's still not great, but better) with SO many menus, the lag was TERRIBLE (again, still not great but on it's way), basic content was almost non-existent, the basic communication functions didn't work, the trading systems in place didn't work and regularly disconnected people. The alpha and beta were there to fix the foundation, and nothing was done.

Sorry, but the fact that 95% of the playerbase left within the first few months should tell you that it was on the road to ruin. Saying that it would be much better now is totally unfounded, and the only evidence we have suggests otherwise.

FFXI changed radically when Tanaka left (although he's back there now, but the team is taking LOTS of player feedback into account) for the better, and I'd say the same is true of FFXIV. The man has a lot of visions, but is totally unqualified and incapable of carrying them out, if this game is anything to go by.
