11 allowed them to buff/debuff/nuke through their summons every minute they could buff/debuff and attack, but they won't do anything that doesn't clone WoW in this game.
FFXI summoner was also boring because it did almost all of the work while you sat back on your butt doing nothing.
That version of summoner was not very iconic, either.

Anything eh? Well, here's my list, parts of it being me repeating myself from other threads.
1: Samurai. Role: Tank. We already have a Japanese style DPS thanks to Ninja, so lets make Samurai a Tank. Besides, this game desperately needs more Tank roles, regardless of the people claiming foul on Dark Knight and Samurai being Tanks. (With DRK confirmed to be one. I'm still drinking their tears on DRK being a Tank instead BTW)
2: Dancer. Role: Healer. Depending on how the role is designed visually, Dancer could easily be the Japanese style Healer role. And likewise to Samurai being the next Tank, this game desperately needs more Healer roles. And diversity at that. So far, all the healers are casters. Upcoming AST included. Lets get a Disciple of War Healer in there. That said, a Disciple of Magic role for Tanks would be nice.
3: Red Mage. Role: DPS Hybrid of Melee/Spellcasting. Giving the way Red Mages are, the way they could work in this game is somewhat broad. I could easily see Red Mage not only have a few spells for standard spell slinging, but also have melee based magic skills that involve swordplay in there. For the sake of not being torn on where to distribute the bonus attribute points, make all damage inflicted by the RDM determined by the intelligence stat, melee attacks included. For all the DPS only players constantly crying for a sword DPS role, RDM is looking likely to be the first sword wielding DPS role, especially given that Yoshi-P has personally mentioned Red Mage lately as one of his favorite jobs. (If memory serves)
4: Necromancer. Role: DPS Spellcaster. Does this even warrant an explanation? Blood Magic, summoning undead, etc. None of which we see among the current roles, unless you somehow count SMN for that. (LOOKING FORWARD TO THEM SMN UPGRADES IN HEAVENSWARD! WOO!)
5: Some kind of "transforming into beasts" job. Role: Tank or DPS. After putting in some research, and even going the distance of toying around with the Venomancer role in Perfect World recently, I'd love to see some kind of job for this game that involves you having a few skills that allow you to transform into a beast of some sort and have skills related to that said beast. Someone mentioned that the job "Morpher" is a thing in a FF game, so maybe that could be the role name.
That's all I can think of in terms of roles I'd love to see in the future. (With 4 and 5 being debatable and up in the air for me. I'd rather see 1-3 happen first) If all this stuff got into the game, I'd be perfectly content and wouldn't see any reason to request anymore roles for this game. If anymore did land in the game, I'd probably play as them too anyway, but eh.

Ours already do that, there's just fewer of them and they have shorter cooldowns that aren't tied to two "abilities," as well as no penalty for having the pet out.
The restrictions and requirements for FFXI SMN were ridiculous.
