I love the idea of FoW for FFXIV. I hate it at the moment. There is no point in exploring which is the whole point in the game. Especially when there are markers showing where all of the zones are for dungeons.
People didn't seem to like the map system in FFXI but I loved it, something to do when I had nothing else to do was go play with Coffers and get maps to places that I normally wouldn't go to, and when I did have to go to these places, I had a map! It was pretty cool looking for keys then looking for the chests.
I agree with Kraggy on the coffer maps, it didn't make sense to have to get the map for an area, from that area. The CN map quest was good I guess but just too time consuming for my liking, maybe if you got a few maps from that quest it would have been worth while but by the time I aquired the map I had memorized the nest so it was pointless.
Fog of war would be interesting, I can imagine it being like FFXII's fog of war. Having FoW also doubles a nice exploration log for adventurers seeing where they have visited before and where they haven't. Honestly, I didn't even know there was another exit to the side of Ul'dah until a few weeks ago.
Only problem is most players would just pop open fan site of some sort and look at full map. Or they would just print out the full map. That is what they did for FFXI when most people didn't know the area and the map was blank.
Just thought of something. If there was ... a FoW, how would that work with Leves? You only have 30 minutes to get to and kill X mobs. If you get lost, you could fail the leve and that...would suck. haha
When you are completing a leve you still have the arrows to guide you and the yellow circles would appear even if that part was still fogged out. It also might make the leves slightly more challenging because atm I'm completing most of them within 5-6 minutes.
I like the FoW idea very much. Coffers in FFXI were excessively difficult for non-thieves to open, so a FoW based system would be a nice compromise between mysteriousness and accessibility.
Imagine navigating the Shroud in the fog lol
