Walking is why we have mounts like chocobos and coeurls, to carry us faster than we can walk. Sprint would invalidate mounts, but Sprint only lasts for 20s on a 30s cooldown relegating it to 'gotta go fast' moments. Flying using personal wings, though, would invalidate flying mounts as why use them if I can do it myself with potentially none of the drawbacks of being on a mount (i.e. being able to attack and interact with the environment). Now if you had wings work LIKE a flying mount then maybe... but then you'd probably have those that would complain, "Why have wings if they're just like if I was using a flying mount?!" Which I would agree to an extent, why have them at all given that having them work as if walking would make them overpowered?
wings if implmented will be like flying mount , cast time , and unable to attack , dismount when chatting with npcs ect....
Flying with personal wings would move your character slower than flying with a mount, just like walking moves your character slower than riding a ground mount. The up side would allow your character to attack/gather/trade/etc like you could if you were on foot.Walking is why we have mounts like chocobos and coeurls, to carry us faster than we can walk. the same reason there are multiple versions of all the avatars. those Sleipnirs aren't real, they are imitations made from Aether. the one we fight in Duty and in the Shroud aren't real either.
the lore question here is
1) are they physical appendages of the existing races? if yes, why didn't we have them before, why do the NPCs of these races not have them?
2) if they are not physical appendages what are they? just magic? if it's a magical spell that let characters fly, it doesn't necessarily have to look like wings. characters have flown in cutscenes before without wings.
3) if they are not physical appendages and it's not magic, what is it? in theory you can have a mount that looks like a pair of wings, some kind of bat/bird that instead of the character mounting it, latches on to a character's back and picks them up. the Bomb Palanquin didn't have to be a Palanquin at all, it could've been 6 bombs with hooks that just hooked onto the character's shoulders and dragged them around. that's purely an aesthetics issue.
so the question becomes, why do some people want wings?
do they want to add physical appendages to all the races? i don't see why they would.
do they want to fly without a mount? just so you can fly slower?
so the actual request really should be either
1) let us fly with magic without mounts but slower, but this would theoretically cost MP or TP. personally i'm cool with using MP to levitate to certain spots on the map without having to call and dismiss a mount.
2) gives us a mount that looks like a pair of wings attached to our backs but they are not actually wings of the existing races. i don't necessarily want this but i would like to see some flying mounts where the animation have us under them instead of being on top of them.
I really wish Square would just come in and say yes or no. There is a clear and broad amount of people that don't want it and I see the same people posting over and over trying to convince others that it's ok. It's clear to me it's a vocal minority trying to brow beat everyone else with this idea.
I'm not seeing your point, if your referring to possibly being able to attack a ground target and it not being able to attack you, you're dead wrong. In Aion it's designed so if you tried attacking a ground target it would either ranged attack you or fly up to you and attack, I would expect FFXIV to be the same.
yeah a crab, coeurl, monkey..... is gonna start flyingI'm not seeing your point, if your referring to possibly being able to attack a ground target and it not being able to attack you, you're dead wrong. AION <> FFXIV
forcing all mobs to have ranged attacks would make ranged dps life miserable while leveling , blm leveling would be a pain in the rear.....
while i would to see a tonberry tossing knives or using ballons to fly (cute)....not gonna happen
