This is pretty much how it goes with me.

The yes and no mannerisms should also (for me) match well with the tone. I really wish there were some sample combat noises, because that is what we tend to hear most often. I can go with great combat voices and okay emote voices, but if the combat noises are unbearable, I'll remake a character. Luckily the voice I have on my current Miqo'te has both, and I'm hoping I will be equally fortunate with Au Ra.

I wasn't looking for anything in particular...then I noticed one option sounded suspiciously like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn so I chose that one. I wasn't 100% sure, but then immediately after you make your character you get introduced to Hydaelyn...who is voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. Long story short, I started flipping the **** out because she's easily my all-time favorite VA.

Miqo'te - voice 2 because it sounded the best to me in character creation (just never /doze in front of relatives or significant others)

Male lala - the little boy voice, its adorable~ and sounds just enough like kid Link for my current main.

Female Au ra (<3) - picked the most soft sounding voice because that is how my voice is irl.

Generally i just pick whatever clicks for me based on the design and intended personality of my characters

I was kind of disappointed in the choice for Lalafell voices. There only seems to be a few which match the small size of a Lalafell, with many of the voices being far deeper and more appropriate on a Hyur or similar sized race. So, in essence I went for the only one which seemed to fit a small bundle of adorable. Childlike, higher-pitched and as cute as a button.

i look for the craziest voice
i'll flip straight over to the laugh tracks and try to find the one that makes me think "yeah he'd kill me in my sleep"
UNFORTUNATELY square doesnt really have any of those so i have to pick the one that makes me think "yeah he'd frown at a kitten"

The chuckle/laugh emote was definitely super important for me too. I went with Miqo'te voice 9 which ticked all the boxes for me, except the /cheer mainly because it doesn't quite fit the animation, but it's a good cheer anyways imo. Contrary to my Au Ra, I was happy with the angry voice because it sounded more playful than serious.

I use /chuckle and /cheer a lot so I'm using those two emotes to gauge what voice to pick. For me it's more what I enjoy hearing over what I think fits the character, though I'll try to make them fit if there's room for it.
I agree on this. The current voice I'm going with is voice 9, which to me almost sounds like the yes and no emotes belong to a different person to the angry/cheer/laugh emotes. Although I was drawn to that voice by the /angry emote, the cheer and chuckle were deal sealers.

I'm totally guilty of going through near enough every voice/emote option to find the one that I feel best suits my created character, and then running through them all in game just to sure along with a lighting/animation check. It's nice having different zones, etc. in the benchmark, but I feel having a little play around in game is a better way to check.

One that fits. I check the chuckle / laugh first too.

Wish it let you check the entire suit of sounds though. I don't know which number I chose any more, but I'm glad I didn't pick the one where all you hear in combat is "WHEEE, WHOO!" "HYAAA!". Every so often I see some dragoon using it and it drives me a little bit crazy. The voice I chose sounds good, especially the response to getting hit.

And this. But sometimes I'd like a mute option for my character.
