I can agree that this situation is an inconvenience at best, but nothing at all is stopping anyone from participating in the contest if they're so inclined to.

Barring the obvious complications in the release of a character creation client for PS4, I do hope they can make it happen for next expansion. Even if I still can't understand how people don't have any capable computer in this day and age...
Sadly the benchmark doesn't launch, it closes out on itself. I've been told my graphics card is outdated. So, yeah, can't participate.

he doesn't need the newest version of DirectX he needs DX9.0c which is not installed by default. not even on windows XP.
he needs to search for and install the DirectX Runtime Redistributable from June 2010*. that will check his installation and install missing libraries including almost the entirety of DX9.0c on all versions of windows is supports DX9.0e and DX11 on windows 7

there could be many reasons for this
windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 and most OEM prebuilt PCs do not include the DX9.0c/e runtime libraries by default and many people do not know to install them(I don't know why microsoft thought this was a good idea)
even if you don't plan to game on your windows machine you should search for the Directx Runtime Redistributable from June 2010 and install it your PC may very well run the benchmark. also make sure if you are on windows vista you have IE9/10 or 7 you have IE10/11
windows 8/8.1 IE shouldn't be an issue. but it still needs the DX9c/e runtimes.

and to note even most outdated GPUs that are still in use can do DX9c(keyword here being most). simple way to find out if your PC can actually run the benchmark is does it run windows 7? does it run windows 7 with Aero enabled(the minimum for that is a DX9c capable GPU)? if it runs windows 8 the minimum for that is a DX9c capable GPU(anything below doesn't have a WDDM capable driver). if it runs windows vista with aero enabled it has atleast a DX10 capable GPU.

yeah I used to try to tell this to people all the time. ended up giving up because so many people are just too dense to get this simple fact.
the hardware in both the PS4 and XB1 is off the shelf midrange PC hardware with a specialized bios and OS. the only reason both companies decided to go this route is it is easier to support this hardware than specialized hardware.
