That is no different than a player who only wants to play with like minded individuals as himself. Said another way. Skilled players who prefer to play with other skilled player. That kind of player to many in this thread would would be considered elitist even without them showing an attitude to anyone at all. It's their choice to make just a you said with your choice yet there are legions of players that hate on them for it. That's prejudice to hate one group but not the other when they are doing the same. It's hypocritical to expect or for yourself and deny that right to others.

You could be an elitist without being an asshole, but it would take a great degree of compassion to behave as an elitist without simultaneously being an asshole to others.

You're missing my point. I'm just saying what he's describing isn't elitist, if he really ment to say "You will find people more supportive of you if you take some initiative to help yourself.", he should have said that in his initial post. Not a wall of spam that tries to redefine what a word means.

You're right, in the strict sense, elitist does not mean what OP is.. However, that's the general opinion of people on the other side that do not make it over (let's just say, noobs). Whenever somebody has an opinion along the lines of "Let's call it a day guys, this is a lost cause" then instantly, many people will call you either an elitist, or impatient noob. God forbid you take it a step further and try telling people what they're doing wrong and all of a sudden you're public enemy number one.

Now, you can look in my profile all you want, but you won't see much info there I'll just say that I'm not progressed in the raids, but I simply lack interest in it. i.e. I'm seeing this topic as a third party that belongs to neither camp because I don't partake in raids in this game. I can tell you though, the attitude is persistent throughout many MMOs I've played. When a person steps up to take the position of leadership/adviser, he is instantly shot down because people cannot fathom a World where another person can possibly know more than oneself. Hubris among gamers is amazing, no matter how bad they are.

Instead of being a generic insult directed at those who try, it can be embraced as a virtue (trying vs. not). Yes, elitism can mean acting superior to others, having a bad attitude, etc. It can also mean taking pride in one's ability and working hard to develop that ability.

Then those people are using the word wrong in the first place. If people are calling others elitist because they "try", those people are ignorant and using the word wrong. Your definition of "taking pride in one's ability and working hard to develop that ability" is pretty off imho. That's saying that every single good player is an elitist by that definition if they're proud of their ability. That's not true at all.

I've run into many people that actively use this as the definition though. It's not accurate I agree, but man is it prevalent.

The way I'm using the word fits the dictionary definition. I'm proud of my ability and I'm proud of myself for trying. I consider myself superior to those who don't try.
