Why I Decided to Become an Elitist

I agree. Many of the people in this thread are too fixated on my use of the word "elitist" and what that word "really" means. It was just a hook to share my thoughts about developing a winning mindset and why people with a winning mindset may not always have fun playing with people without a winning mindset.

As for not having the right to redefine the word "elitist," that seems like an odd thing to say. Where do words come from in the first place? Someone made them up from somewhere. Plus word meanings change all the time. I'm a writer. If I can't contribute to the development of language, who can? Still, though, part of a writer's task is being clear about what they're saying and maybe it would've confused some of you a lot less if I had chosen a different word.

Some people have mentioned how I have not cleared FCoB yet, as evidenced by my lack of a Louisoix minion. This is 100% true. However, I'm not the best player and I've had a hard time finding good groups even once I do learn a fight. I'm not elite as in "OMG I'm the best player in the world." But I do try and a lot of players don't. I don't think there is anyone in this community or any other that can convince me that not trying is somehow more virtuous than trying. So good luck with that.

As an aside, I thought about calling people out for their lack of an Apkallu minion LOL "Oh you think you're elite because you can clear T13? Let's see how you do with 80 different jumping puzzles." But I am 100% certain that some of you would've taken me seriously. Some people just like taking things out of context or they fail to read between the lines. I don't think it's a comprehension failure on their part or a communication failure on my part; I think some people just like to argue.

As a case in point, I clearly said in my OP that I did not condone name-calling and putting people down. Yet some people in this thread have claimed that I'm somehow promoting the abuse of others.

The main point of my OP was simply this: You will find people more supportive of you if you take some initiative to help yourself.

I never suggested being mean to others and I think helping new players is admirable. However, realistically, people do not have infinite patience.

I did say it only I tried to say it in a way that was more entertaining. "Self-centered"? I tried to have some fun and create a good read. But ah, it is easier to destroy than create, right?

Now you know that's not fair. I'm not utterly reinventing the word "elitist." I'm just repurposing it. Instead of being a generic insult directed at those who try, it can be embraced as a virtue (trying vs. not). Yes, elitism can mean acting superior to others, having a bad attitude, etc. It can also mean taking pride in one's ability and working hard to develop that ability.

Then those people are using the word wrong in the first place. If people are calling others elitist because they "try", those people are ignorant and using the word wrong. Your definition of "taking pride in one's ability and working hard to develop that ability" is pretty off imho. That's saying that every single good player is an elitist by that definition if they're proud of their ability. That's not true at all.

I've run into many people that actively use this as the definition though. It's not accurate I agree, but man is it prevalent.

Attempting to redefine a word for for your own argument doesn't work. It also really hurts your initial post and comes off as back tracking. If you really wanted to say that quote in your original post, you should have put that instead of a post which makes it sound like you only want to hear yourself talk (or in this instance, read).

Sometimes I wish the FF forums had a downvote button like reddit. Then people wouldn't think posts like this are the popular opinion or relevant due to likes.
