Won't happen - besides the obvious restriction that your class is identified by your weapon or tool - hammers in FFXIV are tools used by BSM and are not weapons. MRD and it's WAR upgrade use two-handed great axes. GLA and it's PLD upgrade use a single handed sword and shield. If you're hoping for multiple weapon types on the one class like FFXI had, you'll be disappointed. The Armoury System simply does not allow that I'm sorry to say, even with glamours.

The armory system already handles this exact concept with black and white mages, who are able to wield two handed staves and also wands with shields. It clearly isn't impossible for one job to use more than one type of weapon.

But even if this wasn't the case statements like "I want to wield maces as a Paladin" carry the obvious implications that the speaker wants something different than already exists.

It's like if I said "I want pizza" and your answer would be "But there is no pizza in this room". You might be right, but the statement was implying that we should go get pizza. Yes, the armory system doesn't currently allow Paladins to have maces, but that doesn't mean that can't be changed.

In other words, this thread is asking for additional weapon types per job.

Thinking about it, it's pretty much the same thing because it is unlikely that they will make different weapon types have an effect in combat.

Maybe in 1.0, but in ARR there is only the "one-hand staff with shield" animation, even while wearing a two-hand staff.

The idea of the OP go against the "weapon decide the class" philosophy the armory system have since 1.0. New weapon types would come with new classes or new jobs.
We have to see the character as one unity. You pick up a pan and you are a culinarian, because you start to cook something. You pick up a bow and you are an archer, because you start to shoot with arrows. An archer who fight with a lance is not an archer, he is a lancer in this moment.
