Maybe he got hit with a rock in the knee ?
I'm pretty sure that the topic could have used a spoiler warning for those who (like myself) have not completed the MSQ, but I'm certain some bright spark will c9mment asking why we have not yet completed MSQ, and say weshould not read the forum because of this, or do so at our own risk...

Actually Kosmos, it's referencing the White Mage lore, not the main story quest
No, not really, not in this game, anyhow. He could've just cast Regen on himself and used Sprint to get the hell out of there. Even if 20 Kobolds had suddenly showed up out of nowhere, any semi-decent WHM would easily be able to escape.
By that logic, we wouldn't have that fiasco with the 2.55 climax because we're so powerful in game. Dude's dead, Kobolds got him, and that's that. No amount of logic any of us argue would change anything other than saying how stupid it is.
Oh, I know that. But this thread exists, and talking about how stupid some gameplay vs. story discrepancies seem to be is its topic, right? A lot of things in the story don't really make sense, but we can't do anything about it other than mentioning it on the forum. Who knows, with some luck, SE will see that there's a call for slightly more logic in the story and heed it.
Seeing the Final Fantasy franchise's track record, I'd have a better shot of becoming president of Square-Enix than seeing the next Final Fantasy using gameplay logic to act on the plot. If we had that Phoenix Down, Areith would be alive and the game would have ended a lot sooner and end on disc 1. Heck, Borderlands 2 does something similar where a playable character from the previous game gets shot in the head from behind and dies instantly, yet a typical player character in either game can survive being shot once. Yet if the game followed that gameplay logic, we'd have a much shorter game.

It wasn't a head shot, in the chest. Plus I think a Jakobs that was used, and you should know their motto! Not saying it was, just that I think it was.Seeing the Final Fantasy franchise's track record, I'd have a better shot of becoming president of Square-Enix than seeing the next Final Fantasy using gameplay logic to act on the plot. Another thing I never real got about Aerith's death, or rather the reactions to it...Phoenix Down's raise people from KO. KO means Knocked-Out, not dead, and even if they tried it probably wouldn't work. Didn't work for Galuf after all.
That said you are right, usually gameplay logic and story logic end up being seperate (I think most games that have them intersect are either more realistic, or are parodies.)
It's been years since I played Borderlands so I forgot where the killing blow was, but he still be dead, yo, and that's sad. Also, FF7 used "Dead" as a status for your HP being at 0. "KO" wasn't used until FF8 and later. People still associate HP 0=dead for RPGs in general, so people thought a simple Phoenix Down would have solved Aerith's problem of being dead. FF7 wasn't exactly super hot with the translation either.
