You and I will disagree here I think. You wrote; "Evil is a social concept, what would be justified in one social group is unforgiveable in another." I disagree completely that evil is merely a social concept. Without invoking specific names from history, and you can go back 1000s of years to find examples, there are historical figures who's actions are universally considered to be evil.

Heroic action is not ambiguous, it doesn't depend on your point of view. You can flip it around and say, well, what about all those evil henchmen that died? They were just doing their jobs. Sure they were, but as we know from history, the "I was only following orders" defense doesn't hold water. If you chose to work for evil, you made your choice.
