Blood for Blood shouldn't be Berserk.

And neither should Berserk, for that matter.

It should be left alone for the actual Berserker class.

This was talked about during the beta. Yoshi-p said that it would be easier to understand the numbers over than the traditional -ra, and -aga. I heard that in the JP version of the game, -ra and -aga are used.

It wasn't Yoshida who said this, it was Fernnwhales (i'm spelling that wrong I'm sure) and the loc team debated over the subject for, apparently, a very long time. They decided for English localization they would go with roman numerals because the ra-ga-ja suffixes used in the japanese localization feel too arbitrary. They are also applied to materia apparently, and include -da's and there is inconsistencey between the sufixes for materia and spells (-ga is not always the third, -ja is not always the 4th etc.) They felt that anyone who picked this game up as an MMO that did not have FF experience (and they exist, I've known a few) would find the convention confusing.

That said, I don't find the Numbered way to be better, it really only tells you the order in which you learned the skills - the effect of each skill feels completely arbitrary by its name. Either way it's silly and I too would prefer the suffix-based naming system. It's just as arbitrary and feels more familiar. I get -why- they did it, I just don't agree with it

In Japanese, it's always been Fire, Fira, Figa since the very first Final Fantasy. It just wasn't until VIII that we received that spell nomenclature in a localized version, with some tweaks such as Figa -> Firaga (To make it sound less awkward, I'd guess?).

Yep, the names still follow this in Japanese, like Miasra or Blizzaga.

This actually has to do with the translation team, the German version for example uses Fire Fira and Firaga (in their language of coarse) and the JP does also. the localization tema deemed it'd be confusing to new english players, so they didnt use them

That's interesting! As someone who's played FF games since the beginning I have no problem with whatever name... but taking, for instance, my girlfriend who is totally new to final fantasy she was at first very put off and a little confused by fire 1 2 3 and the other abilities with numbers. I explained to her how in some of the FF games they use -ra and -aga and she thought that would actually be easier for her to understand. :P I don't know how true that is for every newcomer to the final fantasy setting though.

Second wind has never been used before but chakra has. The fact that second wind is based on attack power is another nod as chakra in some games was based on VIT but in others was based on attack power. Same with life surge being changed to Lancet. The jp version of Lancet is "ryuken" or dragon sword. In ffxi, drg gets an ability called dragon sword too in japanese but they localized it to spirit surge. I would bet the localization team took life surge's translation in JP and localized it as life surge, but why? It's been called Lancet in more games. As for leeches, when has that spell ever existed in any ff game? Why not call it basuna which is an extremely common named spell. Just seems like "why break the mold" and change the names of common FF abilities? It's like a retcon. It would be like making a new Mario game but they localized his twin brother to be Louis and Princess Peach becomes Dutchess Nectarine.

    Step 1: Open Macro interface
Step 2: Name your new macro "Warcry"
Step 3: Enter the following lines in the macro field
    /micon "Berserk"
    /ac "Berserk"
Step 4: Replace Berserk in your hotbar with new macro
Step 5: Repeat process for any skill you want to rename (for whatever reason)
    Step 6: Profit!

Also your post makes it sound like you're against FFXIV setting new trends. Who knows, maybe Leeches will become the new norm in future FF games. Then all those people will bitch when FFXXI calls it "Treatment" and use arguments like "Remember when FFXIV called it Leeches? Why can't they just use that old-school name instead of making up a new one?!?!"

You're one of these people that enjoys it when companies change things that everyone already loves and is familiar with, like when Avengers 2 is retconning Ultron being a Tony Stark invention instead of a Hank Pyn invention, or when the Street Fighter movie merged Charlie Nash with Blanka. Bet you'd also be a New Coke drinker and eat Doritos 3D or Taco Bell's waffle burrito. xD

I think of 1, 2, and 3 as different types, rather than successively stronger skills.
