FFXI != != WoW != Other MMO's != FFXIV.

This is not a good place to make FFXIV a unique snowflake.

As to your other point, I've completed the main story thank you very much. I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the perspective of a brand new player in late June who's never played FFXIV but thinks machinist looks awesome and wants to play.

That guy's going to feel seriously cheated when he gets everything going and finds out exactly what's required to access the job he was interested in playing. And he's going to be right.
