Edit: Alright, I'm going to test this myself tonight. I'll ping my favorite tank and we'll do a dps off. He's got the same ilvl as me and I'll see what happens.

Testing complete. First against a training dummy and then against a B rank (Naul). Results: With all CDs popped, the MRD was able to take threat back from me, but then was hosed as the CDs fell off (training dummy test, Naul was dead before this happened). So against a single target, while all CDs were popped, the MRD did a lot of damage. Against more than one target or in a prolonged fight, it doesn't hold. So you won't main tank with it....and you can't sustain dps....but yes, it can briefly strip threat off of me.

It does depend on the situation of course. Equally geared with a turreting BLM? Of course it won't last long - that's why the massive enmity buff to tank stances exists (the job stone boost would make a few seconds of difference at most). In LotA however, there's few, if any, fights that last long enough for someone to yank aggro (except maybe King Behemoth, in which case go help out with the Iron Giant).

...Not to mention the fact that 90% of the DPS in there usually aren't as good as you are.

That said, I would see what rotation your marauder friend was using. Storm's eye, storm's path?
My WAR will do well in excess of 400 dps on a dummy, and nearly any fight, MRD you can add about 15-20.
Even just storm's eye, butchers block combo, that builds well over 600 dps worth of enmity. If you do 2 butchers block combos for every storms eye and dropped fracture, that would be more than 800 dps worth of enmity.
There are no DPS in the game right now sustaining 800 DPS.

But really, the obvious way to test this is watch the off tank in the next content you run. Out of their tank stance, unless they are basically horrible, they should be right there at number two for pretty much the duration of the encounter (in most instances, obviosuly duties with heavy add series for the off tank will differ greatly).

What would you have done on the off chance that your other tank was a WAR with 4k hp?

By queueing in the duty finder as a tank, you're agreeing to perform your role as necessary. How your group decides to react to your decision to instead take on a dps role, it's their own choice.

That right there would be my fear. There's almost always at least one new person in LotA. If your alliance's other tank is in artifact gear with an i70 weapon or a base relic, they're going to have huge problems holding hate against more geared dps, or possibly even problems just staying alive. There's sections of the dungeon where you absolutely need one tank from each alliance that's able to tank. If you're in there as a marauder just to have some extra skills, that makes two tanks in your alliance that are probably going to end up DPS'ing while the black mage tanks.

While I'm sure playing as MRD would suffice, you're essentially saying, "Yes I queued up as a tank, but I have absolutely no intention of tanking, or at least no intention of doing it well." WAR is far and away superior at the role you queued for. Sure, MRD could deal more damage if the circumstances are right, but you didn't queue up as a DPS so who cares? If you're queing for a tank position you should do so with the willingness to be the entire group's primary tank (whether you end up filling that role or not).
