Was Fishing An Afterthought?

While I wasn't around for FFXIV 1.0, I've heard that fishing WAS sort of an afterthought. It wasn't in the game on launch, and was added later due to demand. That's pretty much all heresay on my part, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

As for things Fishing brings to the table, Sharks immediately come to mind. There's a big demand for Shark Oil in a lot of high level recipes, particularly carpentry recipes, and Fishing and Retainer Ventures are pretty much the only reliable ways to catch sharks. Razor Clams, Rothlyt Oysters, and Finger Shrimp are all used in Bouillabaisse, possibly the most coveted of all crafting foods.

But yeah, SE has pretty much explicitly stated that Fishing is meant to be more of a hobby than a profession. You can find money in it, but it's not really what it's there for.

You heard wrong.

Fishing was in 1.0 from the beginning and better integrated financially into the game.

The financial impact of fishing in 2.0 was deliberately degraded, but somewhat restored with the later big fishing expansion.

Atleast in 1.0 you could kinda target fish depending on depth. and you could also wear down the fish once you got a bite.

You basically just walked up to a small pond or water hole, and used a spear to catch a fish. It was quick but fun.

I miss my militia gig so much some days. I'm happy I got the La Noscea spearfishing title before it was all taken out, it's easily the prettiest title in the game.

A friend of mine showed me some videos he took of me fishing at the waterfall in Riversmeet and I actually teared up a bit. Watching the video and the jig pattern, I can still tell exactly what fish I was catching in the video. Good memories...

I'd like to see fishing have some more to it. Maybe some skills to spend GP on or an off hand. Just something to expand on.

It was part of the gathering system with bot/min/fsh. You would get shards/crystals depending on the level of area you were getting items from along with the item itself. Most of the fish were used in alchemy recipes as well to turn into shards/crystals.

Shards, dark matter, and catalysts for melding. Like Malakai said, the fish could also be turned into shards and crystals with Alchemy. You could always see a million fish bots at Vesper Bay fishing up black sole.
