It's not so much about killing something or other in an event some time 4 years ago. It was more of the fact that without legacy players support, the game wouldn't continue to exist at all.

This is a little off topic, but yes, ARR would be here without legacy support. The campaign itself was announced after ARR was revealed. It wasn't an instance of SE raising enough money from legacy players to make the game. It was an instance of SE deciding to remake the game and working on the game before they started charging anyone a dime. If anything, ARR can be attributed to the fact that SE is a big enough company to fund an entire remake and them wanting a next gen MMO on the market. Legacy money more than likely went toward to continued development of 1.0 as they had already been working on ARR for year or so before they started charging folks and there were many substantial patches and changes to 1.0(~ 1.23 etc) made during that time.
