I'm sure roleplaying means different things to different folks.
I've seen FCs promoting themselves as "Light-Roleplay."
What does roleplaying in FFXIV mean to you?
(And how do you gather/learn your lore?)

We're a Light RP FC - for us the distinction is we're lazy about keeping distinctions between in-character vs out-of-character, we mostly rely on everyone being able to figure out what we're on about from context, and we usually don't bother keeping in-character or RPing with people outside the FC.
On the other hand we're sticklers for lore and part of the reason we keep a closed group is because it keeps our internal chronology consistent (we don't have to explain away why there's somehow 30 White Mages, for example) so I guess some people would consider that heavy RP.
ERP/ 10 letters
Not on Balmung!
...
Ok, yah, Balmung is the 'Sexy Server.'
Personally, RP is what you make of it. I know a lot of people who ERP in and out of game. I know people who ERP in front of other peoples houses in /say. I also see a lot of people doing hard core lore RP, or light RP, or even just 'character RP' (Pretending to be your character, while still acknowledging game mechanics like DF, PF, etc).
Personally, I don't RP in this game. I get my jollys in actual RP games, like Battletech and W40K, and while I do like the lore in this game, I'm just not into it enough to make any real effort into it.
Now that you've been sufficiently called on the carpet; your move, rhetorical, flatulent, fustian, gaseous, gassy, grandiloquent, oratorical, orotund, windy, bloated, elevated, florid, flowery, grandiose, highfalutin (also hifalutin), high-flown, high-sounding, inflated, lofty, ornate, pompous, pontifical, pretentious, stilted, tumid, turgid; overdone, verbose, wordy - BOMBASTIC.
I imagine it would take some effort to stay in-character 100% of the time.
I have read that Balmug is THE RP server but I didn't realize how many seek ingame dating.
[edit: I don't know why this surprised me since characters can now get married, indicating that in-game relationships are popular]
I had only thought of roleplaying as in ffxiv lore and wondered what that meant to FCs that advertise as RP focused.

It's more that we're all people who were forum and chat-channel RPers as babies and so we grew-up with the convention that IC talk has no markers and OOC talk has some sort of marker like {{OOC talk goes here}} or some-such. You never quite move on from the feeling that if you're not using markers to indicate OOC talk you're being a terrible person.
I'm on Diabolos, where to my knowledge there isn't any sort of RP going on. Since none of my friends are really into RP (that I know of), I pretty much just keep my own internal RP going on. Back stories of my character and my friend's characters as well as constantly doing things in game, especially story missions, based on how my character would do them all while trying to keep to lore, I've even planned ahead on how I would explain my character changing from a Miqo'te to an Au'ra if I decide to switch permanently. It's a little lonely but it helps make the game more interesting for me if I feel like I'm a part of the world I'm in.
As for how I lean/gather lore, these forums have been my main source of lore outside of the game, it's been great.

On Brynhildr roleplay seems to be just playing around in the game in large groups to be silly on a theme... Like fat chocobo vs chocobo armies...
I head a group of serious RPers on the server that plays within lore as best as possible where we play our characters casually or deeply. We've had character deaths and a lot of personal development and storylines...

So... if I want to RP I'd go to Balmung?
Isn't it like, really congested there? And the prices have inflated to the level that a Zalera player like me would say it's damn near impossible to keep up with.
Meh.... I stay IC full time.
Few notice.
Pretty much. It is congested. No idea about prices, make a character there and check market board prices before you transfer.
No mater how inflated prices are there you will be able to find items that are cheap on your server compared to there.
