My PS4 copy of Heavensward won't work for the PS3, why would a non-Steam addon work with a Steam game, or vice versa?

No, it *is* still ignoranance, you didn't make the effort to fully check into it.
How would someone even automatically know to go to a live letter or the steam announcements when it's expected that a company's codes work with a company's products?
You do realize that you can play FFXIV without steam, even if you bought it on steam, right?
So why shouldn't another playable part of FFXIV work without steam?

Ok, you want an answer to your post then. Yes, I would blame myself for purchasing the food made with poison that's not on the label, but on the website, why, because nearly most of the food you buy today has some sort of unlisted "poison" in it that's not on the label, and I didn't do my research!
That's evading the point of my question.Ok, you want an answer to your post then. But fine, another example, to please the people who can't read between the lines as well. What if you bought a game that said "This game will stop working after 1 hour." on the website out of the way, but not on the product page?

I personally just thought it was a reasonable assumption that you'd have to get your expansion through Steam since you would've gotten the original game from there. Doesn't really bug me either way, I was gonna get the digital CE anyway. Paying an extra $90 for some trinkets is just not really worth it to me. ^^How would someone even automatically know to go to a live letter or the steam announcements when it's expected that a company's codes work with a company's products?

Well, they make you register with an SE account if you buy the game on Steam. They could easily flag your account as Heavensward enabled by having codes universally work with the SE account. Steam should be an option, not a requirement.
It's forcing people to rely on Steam unnecessarily. If someone plays FFXIV with a steam bought copy, decide they want to leave steam, then try to get Heavensward, they're out of luck. Steam and FFXIV's playability should not be so intertwined. The other MMO I play that I bought on steam has its most recent expansions in the in game store exclusively, but also has bundles on steam that include some of earlier ones.
Options are a good thing, and I see no reason why the codes can't work on your SE account regardless of whether they're from Steam or not. I'm sure SE could have easily done so if they wanted to.
I personally would not have bought the game on Steam if I had known Steam was going to get to dictate if, and how I get to play FFXIV.

This is horrible. It was bad enough that I have to re-purchase ARR just to play it on Steam. now I cannot get a physical CE and redeem it on Steam.

I am also unsure how your "research" could have prepared you months in advance, when you made your choice to buy or redeem the game on Steam, to know that it would be impossible to get physical CE bonuses as a Steam user. Steam has supported the redemption of game codes from physical boxes many, many times before. I'll note every other platform, even the other digital download options for PC, support the pre-order codes sent when ordering or purchasing the physical box copies. Not only would you have had no idea when you bought it but it sticks out as poorly done even with proper research done. So, I ask you, at what point does this at all seem like something that could have been predicted before the fact or even treatment when compared to other methods of purchasing the game for the same platform?
People keep avoiding that exact same question for me! Sensational posts that inaccurately sum up my posts in attempts to make me look like a fool, hindsight bias, ignorance accusations against people who don't follow live letters or steam forums in defense of important product information not being on the product page, and bashing have been my responses.
