I'd say the community team gave an honest answer, you did read it yourself. It's all up in the air right now. I started a similar thread a few hours ago, but it's kinda going in circles. Some people are saying the physical CE doesn't work with Steam, but there are rumors going around from Twitter and Facebook that customer service reps say it's compatible with Steam. I, too, would like a straight up, honest answer from someone in authority.
The statement wasn't from Valve, the Community Team posted the announcement on the FFXIV Steam announcements page. Extra confirmation on the forum is never a bad thing I guess.

Well I guess this one is official:

Here's to the mass exodus off of Steam! Because, even if you don't want this physical CE, they've made a clear precedent. So if you think you might ever want a box for FFXIV you should re-buy it off of Steam and get the Heavensward for it. Better to re-buy just the core game now rather than more down the line.

Well, that's the confirmation from SE then. Goodbye, Steam. No more money from me.Well I guess this one is official:

I don't really care for the physical copy...though I'm still looking at the early access thingie because I'm boiling with eagerness.
Though I still don't agree with how steam/volvo is pretty much money grubbing at this point.
