You shouldn't be calling people, who have a better grasp of the matter in question than you do, kids. Luck does play a role no doubt, but skill is much more important than you make it out to be.

If you really think a meteor being picked up by someone right behind you (see ~1sec difference) wouldn't matter, versus it being picked up by someone (far) behind both of us, you really are done here lol.

I don't think that, you are the one coming up with such a scenario, trying to save your untenable assertion. And even then it depends on the item you could and so on. Still: these are banal decisions on a very low skill level, others parts of chocobo race got a much bigger impact. End of discussion.
