Square-Enix: For Future Race Polls

To think they didn't even follow the results of that poll after all...

Reptilian/horned race was on 4th place after mammalian demi-beastmen and more customizable options for the existing races. I'm happy for Au'ras too but... They chose the 4th place? SE's mind was already set on it I would assume and the poll was there to look pretty.

I can see why they went with 4th place. We already have Miqo'te so another mammalian race is sort of redundant. Adding new clans/tribes to existing races would probably be seen as lazy and couldn't really be consdiered new races. Mixed races opens up a whole host of things you have to do as far as character creation. I'd think that it would take just as much effort to do that as it would to build an entirely new race from the ground up.

They may have already had the Au Ra in mind and wanted to see how they'd be received. *shrug* The poll doesn't say "the winning race will be added to the game" or anything of the sort, so it's not really misleading.

And yet these pairings already exist canon within the game currently. It's not as if they're showing them mating, so it would be interesting to see the result that mixed parentage would bring.

I voted for mixed heritage. It's the big lumbering unanswered question in any game with multiple races - what happens when you get mixed parentage? There are already countless numbers of mixed race pairings in the game, and while we may not bear witness to the act it's probably safe to assume they're sexually active.

Mi'qote and Lalafell children would be interesting. I imagine them as Lalafell with cat ears and a tail. Roe and Mi'qote children would likely be an abomination though. I understand why we'll probably never see them added to the game, but it would at the very least be interesting to hear stories of mixed-parentage in the game lore. Shame too... I wanted my Miqolalas...

As a Mi'qote I would never want to have kids with a Lalafell because they would probably come out really deformed.

The easy answer for S-E is to just have it like human-elf pairings in Dragon Age: the resulting offspring simply appear human. In fact that would line up with what we already see in-game; mixed-race pairings but no babies or adults with characteristics of multiple races.

You bring up really good points that I can agree on but there is just one thing though... I still see the Au'Ra race as a lazy addition to the game, much more than what different physique builds and options for the current races would have been. Essentially, the male Au'ras use almost the same model as the Elezens while the female Au'ras are a mix of miqo'te and hyur. In my opinion, a new race was not even necessary as we currently have all the character types in the current races and people seem mostly proud of the characters they have. I think it would have been more profitable to allow the players to improve the appearance of the character they love already instead of implementing a new race that 50% of all the servers will switch to in 3.0 just because they get all the new customizable options.

As for what is redundant and what is not... Something is redundant only if the players think its redundant I would say. The players in this case wanted bunny people so I doubt they would have been seen as redundant considering the demand.

Yoshida said himself that they did not really regard the poll's results much because they were aware writing "Viera" as an example biased the votes. Personally I would have voted for a full-animal race like Red XIII, but alas, the option wasn't even there (and SE said already that they wish to keep their playable races "humanoid" to differ from WoW). Oh well... Now my hopes lie in that whatever they do next, it will have androgynous males. I need me a girly-looking boy that isn't a chubby chibi.
