Square-Enix: For Future Race Polls

So a few years back you did a poll on what people wanted to see as a new race.
These were the results:


What ticked me off is that you used Viera as an example for Mammalian Demi-Beastmen which made everyone instantly believe Viera was going to be the new race if they voted enough for it so they all picked that option.

That was a biiiig mistake on your end and completely obliterated the polls making Mammalian Demi-Beastmen the most voted option followed by mixed races and more clans.

I know Au Ra are going to be the new race for this expansion and I couldn't be happier with them. But please, PLEASE RE-evaluate what you use as examples for newer polls. I voted for Mammalian Beastmen hoping Gnolls (like FFXI Gnolls) would be in the near future as a possible playable race. But when you used Viera as an example; that option would instantly win by a land slide and so it did.


I also hope Viera never get added to FFXIV as we don't need any more mammalian like races along with Miqo'te/Cat People.

Interbreeding imo means 4.0 expansion comes out with a very in-depth character creator like a Black Desert / Skyrim, and clans while existing are not restricting.

I guess it really doesn't lol, but it would be one way to introduce interracial races. could use something like a counter of unique traits, so certain aspects require a certain purity amount (to keep an image and semblance to the original races). Though you could have a penta-race'd created character it couldn't have say some classic identifiers like scales while also at the same time have a miqote furry tail, a roe nose, and the height of a lalafell as the cost of these classic items would put you over budget. But you could have a fuzzy scaley dragon Au'qote (like Dark Souls Priscilla) and be of medium height.

I'm not really a huge fan of Viera either, just feels too cheesy to playing the sex sells card (SE's renditions are skimpy and reminiscent of "playboy/casino" girl, generally at least). Although, if they made a crazy detailed character system (probably have to drop the PS3 then) you might be able to make a tall Miq'ote and perhaps SE will add in more variations due to variant breeding (some way to unlock new looks even? Like a Family tree - rounded or rabbit-ish miqo'te ears). Just make Fantasia obtainable in game or at least once in a while, so it doesn't feel like each introduction of variations is a beg of Fantasia payment ("you get one once a year on your account anniversary, of a full year subscription basis").

Reptilian/horned race was on 4th place after mammalian demi-beastmen and more customizable options for the existing races. I'm happy for Au'ras too but... They chose the 4th place? SE's mind was already set on it I would assume and the poll was there to look pretty.

I can see why they went with 4th place. We already have Miqo'te so another mammalian race is sort of redundant. Adding new clans/tribes to existing races would probably be seen as lazy and couldn't really be consdiered new races. Mixed races opens up a whole host of things you have to do as far as character creation. I'd think that it would take just as much effort to do that as it would to build an entirely new race from the ground up.

They may have already had the Au Ra in mind and wanted to see how they'd be received. *shrug* The poll doesn't say "the winning race will be added to the game" or anything of the sort, so it's not really misleading.

You bring up really good points that I can agree on but there is just one thing though... I still see the Au'Ra race as a lazy addition to the game, much more than what different physique builds and options for the current races would have been. Essentially, the male Au'ras use almost the same model as the Elezens while the female Au'ras are a mix of miqo'te and hyur. In my opinion, a new race was not even necessary as we currently have all the character types in the current races and people seem mostly proud of the characters they have. I think it would have been more profitable to allow the players to improve the appearance of the character they love already instead of implementing a new race that 50% of all the servers will switch to in 3.0 just because they get all the new customizable options.

As for what is redundant and what is not... Something is redundant only if the players think its redundant I would say. The players in this case wanted bunny people so I doubt they would have been seen as redundant considering the demand.
