The simplest solution is a gating stat of some kind. Require a special stat to survive certain mechanics within the fights and have gear with that stat only available in places that you want to be used as a gearing path. Problem solved. This is also the laziest solution though and can lead to a lot of long term problems... The biggest issue is usually that your group can tackle a fight just fine but will be arbitrarily wiped out by a mechanic simply because you don't have enough of an otherwise useless stat; it just feels cheap.
