What the heck, you already have 6(!!) characters on this server, and want to create ANOTHER one? And you're complaining about how the server is locked 24/7??Just as the title says, please unlock Balmung, if for no one else, than people that already have characters on the server. I got a fantastic RP alt idea I want to do, but I can't make this character:
Why? Because Balmung is locked down 24 hours a day 7 days a a week. I tried at 11pm, 12am, 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am, and it never opens. If you feel the server shouldn't have new players, then that's fine, keep the restriction, but don't put that restriction on players who are already on the server. Let us make our alts!

This.
I keep seeing these types of threads, and it's only for this one freakin' server.
There are other servers! Go try them out! make new friends! Balmung is overpopulated for chrissakes! That's why it's almost permalocked!

I have an idea so crazy that it might actually work. Hear me out for a moment.
Why don't all the people who want to get alts on Balmung talk to other people who want to make alts on Balmung and agree to a server that isn't Balmung?

Because that happened with the "other" rp server, Gilgamesh. (I think it was Gilgamesh)
rp there died a death a few months after a little less than half of the people from Balmung moved there, p. much.

Sounds like people need to make a choice then. How often is Gilgamesh open?

There is a growing RP community on Siren right now (a lot of Balmung refugees are moving there). Just a few months ago it was almost non-existant, but now you can see the occasional RP event in the Party Finder and Free Company/Link Shells popping up left and right advertising.

Why would the server lock have anything to do with the number of individual characters one person has on the server? They can only play one character at a time. It has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with it. The overall concurrent connections are the issue. Seriously, a server should never be locked to alt characters; that makes absolutely no sense.Wait wait, so let me get this straight.
OP has six characters on Balmung, wasting spots that other people could use to play with their friends, and is moaning that they can't make yet another alt?
I have a great idea: How about you play the 6 characters you already have and stop whining about inconsequential things.
Unless she can post links to actual data, I'm just assuming this info is coming out of thin air and is sketchy, at best.
I don't think you have any idea how databases work. A single character takes up very little overall space, because on the server it is just a database entry with a bunch of fields filled out. I doubt 15000 characters take up even 20GB of space, let alone 100TB. lolCharacter data does mean something and your honestly ignorant if you don't think it does. The data has to be stored somewhere in the server which can only hold so much data. Even if the characters only make up a small amount of data per character 15000 characters could easily take up 100k+ gb of space. And that's a low end estimate.
Yes, you may make up a small % of the population (I belive it to be more than 10-15) but your characters(RP players) take up a much greater amount than the rest of us combine.
And I didn't say I know how there system works, but I'm not stupid I know how memory space works, it doesn't take a genius to understand that.

Probably because I got friends on Balmung, and do not wish to juggle 2 servers? My friends are very dear to me, and wish to continue playing with them, even if on an alt. It makes no sense keeping the server locked for people who are already on the server. I am not suggesting opening it for new people, but to do like WoW does. If a server is closed to making new characters, those who already have characters ON the server, should still be allowed to make ALTs. It's not going to change the population of the server. End of the day, myself and others who want an alt, will still be on the server. So why do you care how many alts someone has?
This guy does it it better http://guildwork.com/users/iulus/characters
