$40 sounds like the price for a physical copy. Digital copies could be cheaper.

Amazon is also selling the expansion for $40. The placeholder price used to be $60. It was changed to $40 in December. Suddenly all stores change the price to $40.

I'm willing to bet the price is really $40 for the expansion. It's not a bad price either. People paid $40 for two virtual wedding bands, it's not difficult seeing them paying $40 for an expansion.

Some people prefer having the game on a disc for faster installation and as a backup install in case you can't get a connection to Square's servers to update or reinstall. I paid less money for a digital copy of the game when 2.0 came out and it's still a little bit cheaper now compared to a disc copy. Square is still making money off of digital copies. The only reason the physical copies are higher priced are to cover the costs of producing the boxes, discs, and shipping them to retailers.

The reason the game was so cheap is because they were advertising a game that was a disaster before the realm was remade, they had no idea this game would have been so popular and now they are cashing in on their success. So $40 seem reasonable. Heck perhaps the $40 version includes the base game.

these are the prices i have seen on average fly around they are not solid only estimates based on the prices of new games and expansion packs :3
