There's something very satisfying about watching someone punch incoming bullets to deflect them.
Anyroad, I always found it really telling that in the entire altercation with Gaius, Yda is the only person to land a punch.
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.

MNK custom LB3. AKA, what melees have right now
To be fair, Gaius turned out to be a complete pushover... Plus, you know, she's the only melee based combatant of the group, Flancred being more of a Bard back then. Papalymo and Y'shtola were on the defensive and I don't actually recall them even attempting to land an attack, all Flancred did was a Death Blossom from what I recall, which 2.0 reuses more than a few times...
Alisaie is probably the most powerful of all... She knocked a certain someones helmet off with Ruin... Yda lands an uppercut on Gaius and nothing... Sometimes I wish we got the 1.0 Gaius back, 2.0 turned him into a complete idiot. Most of the Garleans were actually, though more than a bit of that stems from boss fights always being illogical (I will fight you here! Please don't use those cannons!), Crystal Tower being consistently my favorite just because every other boss just ends up being silly when you ask yourself why certain mechanics happen... I can picture Phlegethon wondering why the hell they put that shield system in place every time he casts Ancient Flare...
Gaius though... I remember when he was warning Nael van Darnus about the Meteor Project, mentioning Bozja Citadel, and so on... Then what does he do? Well firstly he turns his back on Solus zos Galvus for a solo campaign, which given his blade (Heirsbane) is somewhat ironic. I certainly got a good laugh out of it when 2.2 told us of that Solus died... Then he opts to use Allagan tech, apparently ignoring everything that happened the last time a Garlean Legate tried to use Allagan tech... Then he goes and joins forces with the Ascians, who are basically just cartoon villains until their motivation gets fleshed out and their characters expanded upon. He went from being a complete badass, holding his own 1v4 in 1.0 to basically being a puppet for Lahabrea of all people... Add to that his blatant attempts to copy the White Raven ("I'm using the same music! I mean the lyrics wouldn't make sense so we cut them out... But... Look blue flames! Am I cool enough yet?") and I was honestly just completely disappointed with how he turned out...
I feel sorry for the Brass Blades though... Yda punches bullets, they honestly don't stand a chance unless Godbert ends up siding with them (it will never happen but... I want to see that so much now...). After Flancred/Yugiris moment in 2.2 I'm really looking forward to some more action oriented cutscenes, hopefully they don't just go "Yda powers up, runs towards a dozen Brass Blades, end cutscene! Dialog later will explain how she took on 50 of them!".

Well they aren't going to make a storymode fight that hard, plus it was 8v1 that time and we can assume that warriors of light are equal or better than the scions. I'll assume the lack of fleshing out in 2.0s story as a whole was due to the limited budget they would have to work with. Here's hoping Heavensward will have a more fleshed out scenario.

looks like the animation for melee lb

I'm waiting for her to suplex a train.

Spoiler alert...
I have just completed the story arc to date and after the visit to the sharlean monument in mor dhona to pay respects to Moenbryda, when speaking to Yda in the rising stones, she wants to be left alone to mourn the passing of her close friend and Papalymo tells us he is feeling really bad because he is powerless to help her deal with it. I just feel a revenge thing coming and of course poor Urianger maybe we see more of him as never seen before?
