Yeah in stuff like T9 you go stop healing cast a stoneskin when the ghost spawns or when i go sch i dot nael and let my fairy spam embraces on the tank to not generate hate. (me heals so squishy gettin onehit on a crit there D: ) also if you stance heal you can spam stoneskins on cleric while for cures adlos w/e you have to stancedance. In general keeping stoneskins up makes healing certain stuff much easier (soloheal maintank at cloud of darkness imo not possible without stoneskin/regen, stoneskin/adlo as you cannot esuna/leeches that fricking bleed [if they didnt add that option with some of those patches...]).
The point in stoneskinning midfight in general is to have that 18%/10% advantage of HP so your healcast has time to hit (like at bahamuts favour) or you can do your dps in peace.
Full stoneskin > cures doesnt make sense tho if your tank dies. ^-^

FWIW, I always attempt to keep SS up on myself and the other healer in 8 party content.

As for the tank - meh. Rarely outside of pre-fight SSII do I bother to skin the tank. Regen is still legit. In 4-person I get myself in troble a lot for casting regen on the tank pretty habitually. Some tanks dont account for this (mostly douchey speedrunners) and aggro by proximity instead of Flash or O/P. I'll save that debate for another thread.

There are good reasons to add stone skin during a battle. It provides a buffer by absorbing some damage and giving the healer a little extra time. I will put it up sometimes before going into SC to spam holy, it gives me a little cushion.
If dd's are getting hit allot I will throw a stoneskin on the tank to provide a little xtra time to heal the DD's.
It also good to throw on a tank right before a boss uses a ability that can one shot or nearly one shot a tank.. This might save the tank if the tanks timers are down or he is getting hit allot.
There are other reasons too. Basically if you have the mp why not, if someone slips up it can give you a cushion.

If I have the time and mp I will put it up on all players sometime during a boss fight, It may save you when things get hectic or someone makes a mistake later and misses getting out of a aoe and you dont have time to cure them.

You dont to do it as a mp saver though. You do it to buy you a little times sometimes.

Why bother healing at all. The tank will take a beating anyway.

I rarely use stoneskin, though I do main as a Scholar. But when I did play as a White Mage I feel I was a bit too trigger happy with it and always tried to keep it up on every player; I was new, lol. But I will say I have noticed this as an increasing trend. I guess it's the WHM equivelant to Galvenize, and preventing overhealing, you just notice it more because it isn't connected to a heal like Adlo or Succor.

I throw stoneskin out there on myself or the another healer if I know the boss's damage pattern will hit everyone heavily. It does not save MP, it saves having to immediately heal yourself instead of another party member.

It's almost entirely useless to cast stoneskin on a tank after the opening pull.

Depends on the content, outside of the current endgame raid (Aka FCOB right now), I'd agree, very little outside of Cloud plus zero-form debuff stacks hits a decently geared tank hard enough to warrant it.

However, you'll be using Stoneskin on tanks quite a lot whilst progressing through FCOB particularly whilst you are gearing up.

    T10 - Scripted Crit Rips in P1/2
T11 - One of my group single tanks the cleaves, so I stoneskin liberally during phases 2 and 4 to take a bit of the edge off it.
    T12 - Revelation and P2 Flames handover
    T13 - Phase 2 flatten+breath and before Ank Morn

These spring straight to mind, probably more as well =(

I caught a bad habit with Stoneskin since T9, now I think I cast it more then I should. Mostly use it to stay in stance, tank at 75% health or so cast Regen>Stoneskin>Cleric Stance then DPS until SS goes away and cast SS while in stance then continue DPSing until SS goes away again or Regen+SS runs out and the tank takes a chunk of damage. Generally don't do this for massive pulls or quick high damaging fights.

That's completely false. I just did a speedrun through Amdapor HM last night where I could constantly spam Holy/other DPS by mostly just relying on Regen and SS on the tank.
