"Fortify the spirits of your companions", "inspire your comrades to great feats." You are not there for awesome deeps. You are a support class. Get used to supporting your party. That is your job.
A good bard is indispensable not "only for your buffs", but also your DPS contributions. You are the only class in the game whose attacks are not restricted by positioning nor mobility. You can be a source of constant DPS even when evading or repositioning. The only class with ZERO cast time on all attacks. That is your strength and contribution. If you feel the need to have DPS equal/comparable to a pure DPS job, then go play a pure DPS job.
