Did you travel to the BLM quest giver in Eastern Thanalan? BLM quests don't come from the THM guild.

You are skipping steps in the quest the first quest comes from Yayake I'm the thm guild, at the reception desk.

Not to be Cpt. Obvious but you did speak to Yayake in the Thm guild? The quest is called Taking the black. She is the one who offers it, if its not available then I think there is a bug.

Yeah, I've been hovering in that spot waiting to see if yayake will offer the quest. I've been checking for it since I completed the level 15 quest for archer. I sent a request earlier today to see if this is some sort of bug but haven't gotten word back yet form the staff. As far as I understand, from essentially every source available on the web the taking the black quest should appear in the thm guild once the prerequisites are met, and after you follow that questline you continue to get more quests from the quest giver in Eastern Than. Unfortunately I am not getting the initial taking the black quest to populate for me to begin.

Have you completed the main-scenario quest "Sylph-management"?

This is a level 20 quest where Minfilia has you investigate the Sylphs in the Black Shroud. If you haven't done this, you cannot upgrade to a job, irrespective of whether you meet the level prerequisites.

BINGO. Don't think i've done that yet. I just got to lvl 20 main quest so i could get mounts going again and then raised the archer and arcanists. What would be better to run the main quest with to level up, my archer, or arcanist? I already have the arcanist at level 17 so instead of just running through the main quest with my 50thm and wasting all the xp i want to use one of the other classes.

It's all down to your play style, really.

Archer and Arcanist are both ranged DPS. Arcanist has a pet which can assist you. I don't have much experience beyond level 15 with Archer, so my biased recommendation would be to go with Arcanist. XD

I found Arcanist to be the easiest to do solo content with (not that any of it is difficult).

If I was you I'd level Archer through the Story, as you need to level it to get Quelling Strikes (lvl. 34). Archanist has Eye For an Eye at lvl 34 as well but Quelling Strikes is a lot more important and it would be best to get it early.

This ^ eye for an eye is a good utility for raids, but if you're looking to double/triple flare with Raging Strikes, Quelling Strikes is a must or get ready to mostlikely die.

If you are coming from 1.0 and already have a job stone without doing the job quests in ARR. Make sure that you don't have the jobstone equipped until they give it to you again in the questline. You won't be able to access thaumaturge class quests if you have BLM jobstone equipped.
