FFXI does not do it that way, and that is what the OP is talking about.
FFXI claim = nobody else can touch

I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? I recall you could join in someone elses fight, you just wouldn't get items... maybe I am miss remembering.
Anyway, the point is a person sitting on the mob by themselves isn't going to last long anyway.

What they ended up doing with many NMs was making them poppable via an item you were use on a target ??? where the NM was to be fought. The party or alliance grouped with the player who spawned it claimed it. That group would either kill it for the chance at loot, or wipe and lose their chance and need to get another token item to pop it again. I don't think two different groups could pop it at the same time, but this system did allow for players to come spawn the NM they wanted to kill anytime of their choosing, rather than having to camp for hours and then spam w/e ability they would use to claim when the window was open in hopes that thier party/alliance got the claim and could fight it against many other groups of players and probably not get the claim.I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? The pop system was a definite improvement. But honestly I wouldn't want something like that for Hunts. Hunts are fine the way they are right now. You don't get there fast enough you miss out, tough luck.

It was that way from NA launch, but I haven't played in about 6 years so they might have changed it. In the early days of HNM/gods, it wasn't uncommon for healers to be outside the alliance fighting him, and for mages to be swapped in and out of the alliance while recovering MP.I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? All it takes is a couple people at the mob and they can hold it while the rest of the group gathers up, and several dozen people just stand there watching.
