I personally really like this idea. By allowing characters to do this, it will have them seek out crafters who have mastered their desired class, facilitating this whole "It's a MMO, a community, not a single-player do-it-all-yourself game" idea which people like to throw around.

I feel this will add more identity to individual crafters, and give them the opportunity to find more work.

I am also in favor of this. As long as it applies to combat class jobs as well.

You say class jobs so do you mean...

My r50 Lancer can become a dragoon but my r50 THM cannot become a... whatever job they're getting?

    Yes.

If you need to choose one craft to specialize in, you should also have to choose one job (WHM, DRG, WAR) to specialize in.

What would the benefit be to that?

Even if there was a benefit I seriously doubt SE would implement jobs with this limitation.

While I agree that I strongly doubt SE would implement jobs with this, why only allow specialization of one craft versus allowing specialization of multiple jobs?

Why one and not the other?

Actually, I just gave my thoughts on Job specializations which you may or may not have ignored! :P

    Because their focus is different.

A linkshell group goes into a dungeon. Their paladin has to go on a date. Someone else with it leveled can take his place. They could find someone else to take his place but you don't know if that paladin is any good or if he will mesh well with your group.

you are a master in alchemy. you've just made nq batraal glue and are about to sell it on the wards. because you are one of the few master alchemists there isn't very many batrall glue up on the wards and you can still make a decent amount of gil.
