...what?
Your average shotshell config relies on piercing to create shock, internal damage and exsanguination
Standard rounds don't *penetrate* like rifle rounds but they still pierce.
Shotgun style weapons can utilize a lot of utility/exotic projectiles, granted. Shot, birdshot, beanbags; sabot slugs; traditional slugs; buckshot; flechette rounds; compressed Moogle rounds; miniature aetheryte disruptor rounds...

Yeah, those pellets are most definitely still going to pierce flesh. Iirc there's a type of ammo for shotguns that are just a bunch a pellets and I would not consider the kind of damage they do to be striking.
im sure most of the MNK knuckles, pierce flesh too....since they got stabby points, or slashing claws...they still do blunt damage.
The bullet is not sharp enough to pierce allagan skin, so it'll be blunt damage..
Whether or not a weapon literally pierces flesh or not isn't relevant. A Monk's attacks rely on blunt physical trauma to deal damage, so they are blunt type attacks. An Bard's arrows or Dragoon's lance relies on their ability to create penetrative force with the intent of causing harm, making them piercing attacks, and gun's serve the same purpose regardless of what shape their bullet is.
It would also be total balance nonsense to give the job with the strongest personal DPS potential in the game to create even more party DPS via sharable debuffs.

video games are bad
Guns have almost always in SE games, barring special ammo or a specific damage type exclusive to them, dealt piercing damage.
Also, except for some really oddball RPGs, guns almost always rely on the DEX stat or equivalent for determining damage.
Therefore, Machinist will use DEX for their physical damage and said damage will default to piercing. The only exception is if the gun can be altered a la monk stances or ninja poison to deal other damage types, which I doubt since they'll have drones and such as their gimmick mechanic
The way I view piercing as in it's something that pierces the flesh like a bullet. Blunt I picture hitting something and maybe breaking bones or something but not necessarily rupturing the skin.
The difference I meant to convey is a rifle bullet does damage by penetrating a target, while musket balls and shotgun pellets(while absolutely are still capable of going through a target, though they do so by smashing through it rather than piercing through it) do the majority of their damage through blunt force. An average rifle bullet to the shoulder might break a bone, but a musket ball to the shoulder would tear an arm off.
are we talking like... civil war muskets? <_<The difference I meant to convey is a rifle bullet does damage by penetrating a target, while musket balls and shotgun pellets(while absolutely are still capable of going through a target, though they do so by smashing through it rather than piercing through it) do the majority of their damage through blunt force.
